Romantic Lodges and Lakes in Uganda

Travel advisory, as of October 2026: the US State Department lists Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel, raised in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that Uganda declared over in late August 2026; the listing also cites crime, terrorism and unrest. The UK FCDO warns that attacks are very likely, including in national parks. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Uganda under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, which carries long prison terms. Lodges Over Landmarks

Uganda is not a beach or city-break destination, and its romance is lodge-based: forest ridges, a river island, a lakeside terrace. Rates at the best lodges are high and are usually quoted in US dollars. Plan two or three nights at each stop, because the drives between them are long.

Forest Lodges Near Bwindi

Gorilla Forest Lodge, Buhoma: rebuilt and reopened in 2025, in the north sector of Bwindi. Stay here if your gorilla permit is for Buhoma.

Match your lodge to the sector on your permit, because sectors are two to four hours apart on rough road. The permit is about USD 800 each, with a minimum age of 15, and about USD 600 in April, May and November. Security personnel accompany treks near the Congo border.

A Lodge on the Nile

Murchison Falls

Nile Safari Lodge, on the south bank of the river, has bandas. Only its Family Banda has a private pool, so ask what each room type includes. The launch cruise to the base of the falls costs about USD 30. Details are at nilesafarilodge.com .

Ngamba Ecolodge

On Ngamba Island, about 23 km south-east of Entebbe, the ecolodge has tented cottages and sunset cruises, with chimpanzees on the island. Boats leave Entebbe at 09:00 and 12:45, and you pre-book through chimpanzeetrust.org .

Lake Bunyonyi

Bunyonyi is a highland lake near Kabale at about 1,960 metres, with terraced hills and many islands. Couples come for lakeside lodges and canoe time; wear lifejackets and ask your lodge about swimming. The name is usually glossed as place of little birds.

Staying Safe on the Water

Do not swim or snorkel in Lake Victoria, the Nile or the Ssese shores. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles live in these waters. Enjoy the water from a lodge terrace or a guided boat instead.

Practical Notes

Most lodges arrange transfers, and domestic flights from Entebbe reach Kihihi, Kisoro, Pakuba and Mweya; confirm schedules. FCDO does not recommend travelling outside main towns after dark. Carry your yellow fever certificate and check entry rules for your nationality and routing.
