Uganda Safari Circuits: 5 to 10 Day Routes
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: Washington has Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel, a level set in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that Uganda declared over in late August 2026, with crime, terrorism and unrest also listed. The UK FCDO warns that attacks are very likely, including in national parks. Under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, same-sex sexual activity is illegal. Check the FCDO regional risks page and the US advisory , and buy insurance that covers every park on your route.
Choosing a Circuit
Uganda’s best sites are spread across the west, north and east, and each leg takes hours on slow roads. Pick one circuit and give it enough days. The gorilla day cannot be bolted on to a Kampala to Jinja weekend. Rough driving times from Kampala: Murchison (Paraa) 5 to 6.5 hours, Fort Portal 5 to 6, Mweya in Queen Elizabeth 6.5 to 8 and Bwindi 8 to 10, including 2 to 3 hours on unpaved mountain road.
Western Circuit, 7 to 10 Days
A typical order runs Entebbe, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Mburo and back to Kampala via the Equator monument at Kayabwe.
- Kibale: chimpanzee tracking, about USD 250 for foreign non-residents, minimum age 12. The Bigodi Wetland walk is nearby.
- Queen Elizabeth National Park: the Kazinga Channel launch and the Kasenyi plains, with tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. Two tourists and their driver were killed in the park in October 2023, so use an established operator and avoid driving after dark.
- Bwindi: the gorilla permit is fixed to one sector, about USD 800 (about USD 600 in April, May and November), minimum age 15. Security personnel accompany treks near the Congo border.
- Lake Bunyonyi: terraced hills and canoe time near Kabale.
- Lake Mburo: boat cruise and ranger-led walks.
Semuliki, the Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese and Bundibugyo sit near the western border, where FCDO warns of attacks, including armed attacks on security sites in November 2025. Crossings such as Bwera can close at short notice, and you should not join tours that cross into the Congo.
Northern Circuit, 5 to 7 Days
This loop starts at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, then runs to Murchison Falls for the launch cruise, the delta trip and the hike to the Top of the Falls. Murchison entry is about USD 45 per day. From there you can drive on to Kidepo through Gulu and Kitgum, or fly from Entebbe to Apoka. Kidepo has Narus Valley game drives, a Karamojong manyatta visit and southern white rhinos reintroduced in March 2026; early in that programme, sightings are not promised. Kidepo and Karamoja see cattle raids, and the South Sudan border is close, so avoid night driving. Rains from March to May and October to November call for a 4x4.
Jinja and the East
Jinja offers rafting and Adrift’s bungee tower, with Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon further east. Sipi’s tallest fall drops about 95 to 100 metres. Mount Elgon’s Wagagai Peak stands at 4,321 metres.
Rwenzori Trek, 7 to 9 Days
The Central Circuit starts at Nyakalengija and climbs to Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres, the highest point in the country. Guides and porters are compulsory and the terrain near the summit is technical glacier. Operator packages for 7 days cost about USD 1,660 to 2,150. Kasese-district caution applies.
Planning Tips
Safari vehicles are 4x4s with pop-up roofs, as coaches cannot reach Bwindi, Mgahinga or the game tracks. Bush flights from Entebbe and Kajjansi serve Kisoro, Kihihi, Pakuba, Kasese, Mweya and Apoka; confirm schedules. Carry your yellow fever certificate and check entry rules for your nationality and routing.
