Monteverde Stays of 2 or More Nights
How Many Nights
Two nights is the minimum that makes the trip worth the road. The first allows one timed circuit at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve plus a guided walk at Santa Elena Reserve or Curi-Cancha. The second covers a night walk and an adventure park. Add a third night for gardens, a coffee farm and slower mornings.
Getting There
- From San Jose: about 145 to 167 km, a drive of 3 to 4 hours. Transmonteverde buses reportedly leave from Terminal Atlantico Norte, usually around 6:30am and 2:30pm, taking about 4 hours for roughly $9 to $15. Check times and the terminal before you travel.
- By car: Route 606 into Monteverde is mostly paved and a normal car manages it in dry weather. Four-wheel drive is not required. The road is steep and winding with fog and no street lights, so avoid driving after dark.
- From La Fortuna: about 115 km by road in 3 to 3.5 hours, or about 3 hours by jeep-boat-jeep with a 45 minute boat crossing of Lake Arenal. Shared fares run about $25 to $35 per person one way, so confirm the price with the operator.
A Classic Route
Many visitors link Monteverde with the Arenal area: two nights in La Fortuna, the lake transfer, then two nights in Monteverde. From there, Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast is about 4 to 5 hours away, and the Guanacaste beaches are about 3 hours away. Monteverde has no beach, so a coastal leg is a separate stop.
Sample Two-Night Plan
Day one
- Book a Preserve circuit for the morning. Check in at the Visitor Center, 1.5 km below the entrance, 15 minutes before your slot. Late arrivals may not be admitted, and a free shuttle runs to the entrance.
- In the afternoon, join the Santa Elena Reserve guided walk at 1:00pm (other departures are 7:30, 9:15 and 11:30). It costs 20,000 colones, about $44, lasts 2.5 hours and needs booking a day ahead.
Day two
- Spend the morning at Selvatura or Treetopia. Selvatura’s canopy tour is about $80 and takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Treetopia’s Sky Trek is $99 for about 2.5 hours.
- End with a night walk. Bajo del Tigre leaves daily at 5:30pm for $30, and a minimum of two people applies. Curi-Cancha runs from 5:30 to 7:30pm for $35.
If you have a third night
- Visit the Orchid Garden (9am to 5pm daily, guided tour included) and the Butterfly Gardens (adults $20).
- Take a coffee farm tour with Don Juan Tours or Cafe Monteverde Farm and Roastery.
- Browse the CASEM craft shop in Santa Elena.
Packing and Booking Tips
Nights fall to 12 to 14 C, so bring a warm layer and a rain jacket. Umbrellas are not allowed in the Preserve. Book Preserve circuits online as soon as your dates are set. Most operators quote US dollars, while Santa Elena Reserve quotes colones at about 450 to $1.
