Day Trips and Outings from Monteverde
Stay in the Valley
Monteverde is a destination in its own right rather than a base for long day trips. The best places are inside the valley, and most sit 5 to 30 minutes from Santa Elena by road. Big-name sights elsewhere in Costa Rica are too far for a comfortable return trip, so this page keeps to what is realistic.
Outings Within About 30 Minutes
- Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve: about 6 km north of town. It has 12 km of trails and a 13 m observation tower. The 2026 self-guided adult rate is 10,000 colones, about $22. Some of the side roads near the reserve are rough, and a high-clearance car helps in the rainy season.
- Bajo del Tigre: the trail sector of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest in Cerro Plano, with 4.5 km of trails. Self-guided adults pay $18 and guided day walks cost $43 (two-person minimum, reservation needed).
- Curi-Cancha Reserve: an 83 ha private refuge, 300 m northeast of the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Self-guided entry is $25 for adults.
- El Tigre Waterfalls: a hike of about 8 km past 4 waterfalls with swimming holes, about 20 minutes from Santa Elena. The last entry is in the early afternoon, so start in the morning and ask the operator about the shuttle.
- Monteverde Extremo Park: in La Cruz de Abangares, with transport from Monteverde at $10 per person. Its bungee drop is 143 m and its Longest Canopy covers about 4 km.
Selvatura Park and Treetopia Park are also close to town. Both are covered in the attraction tours guide.
La Fortuna and Arenal
La Fortuna is about 115 km away, a 3 to 3.5 hour drive on paved roads. The jeep-boat-jeep transfer also takes about 3 hours, including a 45 minute boat crossing of Lake Arenal from La Represa to Rio Chiquito. Shared seats cost about $25 to $35 per person one way, and a private vehicle for up to 4 costs about $320 to $370. A return day trip would use most of the day in transit, so treat it as a move between bases. Hot springs are in the La Fortuna and Arenal area, about 3 hours from Monteverde, and are not an evening dip from town.
Rafting
Whitewater rafting is not offered in Monteverde. Day trips with hotel pickup run to the Rio Tenorio (class 3 to 4), about 2 hours away each way. That makes for a long day, so book only if rafting is a priority.
Places Too Far for a Day
- Manuel Antonio is about 4 to 5 hours each way.
- Rio Celeste is roughly 3 hours or more each way.
- Tortuguero is not a day trip from anywhere in the region.
- The Guanacaste beaches such as Playas del Coco and Hermosa are about 3 hours away.
San Jose is 145 to 167 km away, a 3 to 4 hour drive. Route 606 into Monteverde is mostly paved, steep and winding, with fog and no street lights, so plan to arrive in daylight.
