Walking in Uganda: Wetlands to the Rwenzori
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: Washington rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel, a rating set in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that Uganda declared over in late August 2026; crime, terrorism and unrest are also named. The UK FCDO warns that attacks are very likely, including in national parks, and advises against travel outside main towns after dark. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023. Check the FCDO regional risks page and the US advisory before booking.
Walk With a Guide
Few places in Uganda allow unescorted walking. In unfenced parks, walks happen only with an armed UWA ranger, because elephants and hippos cause deaths in Ugandan parks every year. Community and city walks are easier, and the options below are ordered from gentle to demanding.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
The community-run sanctuary, managed by KAFRED on the edge of Kibale National Park, has a boardwalk and trail walk of roughly 3 hours. Walks start around 07:30 and 15:00. Up to 8 primate species and many birds live here. Bring binoculars, insect repellent and waterproof shoes. The wetland is a good choice for walkers below the chimpanzee-tracking age of 12.
Lake Mburo National Park
Guided walks go out with an armed UWA ranger only. Buffalo, hippo and leopard occur in the park, so it is not a place for relaxed strolling. There are no elephants, and whether lions live there is disputed. Entry is about USD 40 and the nature walk is about USD 15. Giraffes were reintroduced from Murchison.
Bwindi Nature Walks
Away from the gorilla treks, rangers lead walks such as the Munyaga waterfall trail, Rushura hill and the Muzabajiro loop. Bwindi sits near the Congo border, and security personnel routinely accompany visitors. Gorilla trekking itself needs a permit of about USD 800, and you must be 15 or older.
Kampala City Walks
A small-group Kampala walking tour of about 5 hours is listed on Pelago. Old Kampala, Owino market and Nakasero market are the usual stops. Pickpockets work crowded markets, so carry little, and FCDO does not recommend boda-bodas, so arrange a car for the ride back. Avoid demonstrations and crowds, because protests in Uganda have turned deadly.
Rwenzori Central Circuit
The Central Circuit, which runs from the Nyakalengija trailhead, takes 7 to 9 days to reach Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres. Terrain near the summit is technical glacier, and guides and porters are compulsory. Operator packages cost about USD 1,660 to 2,150 for 7 days, and some companies list 2026 departures. Kasese district and the western border area carry a warning: FCDO notes armed attacks on security sites in Kasese and Bundibugyo in November 2025. Check the situation before you commit.
Mount Elgon
Hikers can climb to Wagagai Peak, 4,321 metres, on the caldera rim of Mount Elgon over several days.
Kidepo Valley
Walks in Kidepo are allowed only with armed rangers. Karamoja sees cattle raids, and the South Sudan border is close, so avoid night travel. Rains from March to May and October to November call for a 4x4.
Practical Notes
Wear sturdy shoes, a rain layer and sun protection, and carry water. Malaria risk applies everywhere, so ask a travel clinic about protection. Bookings for treks and permits are made in advance through a licensed operator.
