Monteverde Viewpoints and Gardens
Views Depend on the Cloud
Monteverde sits in the clouds for much of the year, so every viewpoint is weather-dependent. Mornings tend to give the best chance of a clear horizon, and a calm, dry day helps. Plan one or two view stops and fill the rest with gardens and forest.
Forest Viewpoints
- La Ventana and the Continental Divide, Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. The Continental Divide Trail is 4.1 km and takes about 2.5 hours, passing a hanging bridge and a dwarf forest before the Continental Divide and La Ventana viewpoints. On clear days the outlook runs across the watershed that sends water to the Pacific and the Caribbean. It is a moderate walk, and tickets are timed and booked online at about $29 for foreign adults.
- Santa Elena Reserve observation tower. The tower stands 13 m high on the Youth Challenge trail and is included in entry (10,000 colones, about $22, in 2026). On a clear day it can show up to four volcanoes, Lake Arenal and the continental divide. The reserve says views are unlikely when the cloud forecast is above 55 percent. Open 7am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm.
Above the Canopy
- Tree Tram at Treetopia Park. One of five cableways in Costa Rica and the only one in Monteverde. The ride is a 1 mile round trip of about 20 minutes and climbs to 5,700 ft. It costs $59 and runs 8:00am to 3:40pm.
- Glass-floor bridge. A 42 m glass bridge opened at Treetopia in March 2026 and is included in the $49 Sky Walk. The Sky Walk has 6 hanging bridges on 1.7 miles of trail and takes about 2 hours, with departures hourly from 7am.
- San Lucas Treetop Dining. This is a restaurant rather than a sight, but its glass rooms in the canopy look over the Monteverde forest at sunset. The Tribute menu is $172 with taxes included.
Gardens and Close-Up Wildlife
- Monteverde Orchid Garden. In the middle of Santa Elena, with about 450 species and around 120 in bloom on any day. It has about 300 m of accessible trail and opens 9am to 5pm daily. A guided tour is included, and it helps because about 80 percent of wild orchids are miniature.
- Monteverde Butterfly Gardens. In Cerro Plano, with guided tours daily from 9am to 3:30pm. Adults pay $20.
- Curi-Cancha Natural History walk. A guided 3 hour walk at 8am and 1pm, limited to 9 people, for $55 (children $45). The reserve covers 83 ha with 200+ bird species.
Tips for Sightseeing Days
- Wear layers and a rain jacket, because wind and mist change fast.
- Wildlife is shy, so treat any sighting as a bonus. Never feed or touch animals, and keep flash off.
- The quetzal is most likely seen from roughly January to June. It is never guaranteed, and bellbirds are heard more often than seen.
- Treetopia pauses its rides in strong wind or thunderstorms.
