Monteverde Guided Walks and Trails
Guided Walk or Self-Guided
Monteverde’s reserves all offer self-guided trails and small-group guided walks. A guide adds the species names, the stories behind the forest and a better chance of spotting shy animals, and the groups stay small. Wildlife is never guaranteed, so treat each sighting as a bonus.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve
The Preserve sells timed tickets online at cloudforestmonteverde.com . Each ticket covers one marked circuit.
- Essence Trail: 1.4 km, about 1 hour, easy, no bridge.
- Heart of the Forest Trail: 2.8 km, about 1.5 hours, easy to moderate, with the hanging bridge.
- Continental Divide Trail: 4.1 km, about 2.5 hours, moderate, with a bridge, dwarf forest and the La Ventana viewpoint.
- Natural History Walk: a guided walk of about 2.5 hours, from 7:30am to 1:00pm, with a maximum of 10 people and guiding in English. Guided fees are sold separately from the circuit tickets.
Meet at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Visitor Center, 1.5 km below the entrance, 15 minutes early. Parking is free and a shuttle runs on the slot time. There are no restrooms on the trails, so eat after the walk.

A Short Walk in Santa Elena
The town itself suits an easy loop on foot. Stop at the CASEM craft shop, a cooperative founded in 1982 by eight women that sells textiles, jewellery and carved items. The Orchid Garden is also in the middle of town. It offers a guided tour of about 45 minutes and opens 9am to 5pm daily. The Frog Pond is another stop, so check its hours and prices before you go.
