Day Trips from Kingston: Hills and Coast
Travel advice, October 2026: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime, concentrated in inner-city neighbourhoods, and both the UK FCDO and the US State Department name areas to avoid, including parts of Kingston. Use licensed or hotel-arranged transport, avoid walking after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go.
Kingston works well as a base for day trips of up to about two hours each way. The mountains, Port Royal and the beaches west of the city are all close. The north and west coasts are not: Montego Bay and Negril are 3.5 to 5 hours’ drive each way, and Falmouth, where the Martha Brae River is rafted, is over three hours away. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Kingston and the Blue Mountains lie in the east, away from the area worst hit by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025.
Holywell in the Blue Mountains
Holywell Recreation Area is part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, a World Heritage site. It is about 26 km and an hour’s drive north-east of Kingston by Papine, Gordon Town and Newcastle, at roughly 1,200 m. The road is steep, narrow and twisting with blind bends, so use a confident driver or a pre-hired mountain charter. Admission is US$10 for adults and US$5 for children, from the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT), whose fee page dates from March 2023. Five trails start here: Blue Mahoe (250 m, 10 minutes), Oatley Mountain (1.2 km, about an hour), Waterfall (1.3 km, about an hour), Shelter (600 m, 30 minutes) and Wagwater (600 m, 30 minutes and steep). Temperatures sit around 16 to 20 degrees C, so bring a fleece and rain jacket. Hours are not published, so call JCDT on 876-619-9807 to confirm the trails are open before you set out.
Blue Mountain Peak, at 2,256 m, is a night hike rather than a day trip: 9.3 km each way from Abbey Green, about seven hours round trip, starting just after midnight to reach the summit for sunrise. The trail fee is US$20 and a guide costs extra.
Port Royal and Lime Cay
Port Royal lies about 25 km from New Kingston by road along the Palisadoes. A morning covers Fort Charles, the Giddy House and the old naval village. Gloria’s Rendezvous on Queen Street is the long-running seafood restaurant, so check it is open before you plan lunch there. Main dishes run about J$2,500 to J$4,500. From Port Royal, local boats take about 15 minutes to Lime Cay, which has no facilities.
Hellshire and Fort Clarence
About 25 km west in Portmore, Hellshire Beach is a free public beach lined with fish shacks, where you choose a fish from the icebox and have it fried with escovitch. Erosion has reduced the sand, and weekends are crowded. Fort Clarence Beach Park next door is run by Guardsman Hospitality, and has been reported to charge about J$1,000 for adults and J$500 for children. Part of Portmore is named in travel advisories, so go by day, in a group, with a driver.
Spanish Town
Spanish Town, about 20 km and 30 minutes west, was the capital of Jamaica from 1534 to 1872. Its Georgian square holds the Old King’s House, the Old House of Assembly, the Rodney Memorial and the Cathedral of St. Jago de la Vega. Visit around midday, with a guide or driver, and do not wander the side streets.
Port Antonio and Portland
Portland Parish is about 95 km north-east, around 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Rafting on the Rio Grande is a calm two to three hour float on a bamboo raft for two. The official rate set in September 2023 was J$12,000 for the long trip and J$10,000 for the short one, per raft. Pay only at the official offices at Berridale or Rafters Rest. Boston Bay, near Port Antonio, is known for jerk pork and chicken.
