Multi-Day Routes From Yerevan
Travel advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, and the US lists Armenia at Level 2 with a warning for the Azerbaijan border region. The routes below use main roads outside those areas. Before you book, read gov.uk and travel.state.gov , and do not detour onto side roads in Syunik or Tavush.
Armenia is small enough that a single hotel in Yerevan can serve most of a week, but the south and the north each repay a night or two on the road. These are the routes that work from the capital.
Yerevan as a base for 4 or 5 nights
Keep one hotel and treat Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap with Areni and Noravank, and Echmiadzin as separate day trips. On the days between outings, visit the Matenadaran, the History Museum and the Cascade. Most of the museums close on Mondays, so use Mondays for the outings. The 4-day itinerary and the 5-day itinerary show how to arrange these.
Two days in the south
Day 1 starts with Khor Virap, then Areni-1 and Noravank. From there the road climbs over the Vorotan Pass at 2,344 m and passes Zorats Karer, also called Karahunj, near Sisian. Finish the day in Goris, known for its Stone Forest. Plan on a full day of driving.
Day 2 begins with the Wings of Tatev cable car at Halidzor and the Tatev Monastery at the top. The cable car is 5,752 m long, takes about 12 minutes and does not run on Mondays. Between March and November a return ticket costs 9,000 AMD and a one-way ticket 6,500 AMD. From December to February the prices drop to 5,500 AMD return and 4,000 AMD one way. Tickets are non-refundable, though unused e-tickets can be exchanged within 14 days. On the way back, stop at Shaki Waterfall near Sisian. Keep to the main road through Goris and do not turn east of the town or south of Kapan. Current prices and hours are on tatever.am .
Sevan and Dilijan, 1 or 2 nights
Lake Sevan and Dilijan fit into one night or two. From Lake Parz you can walk to Goshavank, about 6.5 km on foot. Add Haghartsin monastery and the craft street of Sharambeyan. Do not use the Ijevan to Noyemberyan road or visit villages around Ijevan.
The Lori loop
The Lori route visits Haghpat and Sanahin, both UNESCO monasteries, and can include rafting on the Debed gorge. Sleep in Alaverdi or in Dilijan. Rafting Armenia runs the Debed for about 12,000 AMD per person on an 11 km run that takes 1.5 to 2 hours, from age 14. See tumanyan.town/rafting for the booking page.
Gyumri overnight
Gyumri, the second city, makes a simple overnight by train or marshrutka. Check the railway timetable before you travel.
