Day Trips from Trincomalee by Road
Day trips from the coast
Trincomalee works as a base for wildlife and ancient cities inland, and for beaches and springs close to town. Roads are slow, so choose one big outing a day and start early. The weather matters too: the north-east monsoon, roughly October or November to February or March, brings rough seas and heavy rain, while May to September is the calm season on this coast.
Kaudulla and Minneriya elephant gatherings
These two national parks are the nearest big wildlife outing. Kaudulla is about 75 km away, so allow about 2 hours each way.
- Minneriya’s elephant gathering peaks from August to September.
- Kaudulla draws its larger numbers from about September or October to November or December.
- Jeeps usually go out in the afternoon, from around 14:30 to 18:30, to watch the herds near the reservoirs.
- Expect hundreds of elephants in a good year. Sightings are not guaranteed.
- Stay in the vehicle and keep quiet. Never feed or approach the animals.
Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
These three ancient sites are each a long day from the coast, about 2.5 to 3 hours in each direction, so none of them is a relaxed outing. Pick one, or stay a night inland.
- Sigiriya. The rock fortress of King Kashyapa, with a long climb of about 1,200 steps past the mirror wall and rock paintings.
- Dambulla. A cave temple with five caves of Buddha statues and ceiling murals.
- Polonnaruwa. A medieval royal capital of palaces, stupas and the rock-cut Buddhas of Gal Vihara.
Foreign visitors pay a ticket for each site, and prices change, so check the current price before you go. Yala and Wilpattu national parks are far across the island and need overnight trips of their own.
Closer to town
- Kanniya Hot Springs. About 8 km north-west of town, with seven square wells only 3 to 4 feet deep. Foreign visitors pay about LKR 50 at most sources. Visit in daytime and keep soap and detergent out of the water.
- Marble Beach. The Sri Lanka Air Force runs it, so bring your passport for the ID check. A small entry charge applies, reported at LKR 20 to LKR 100. It lies roughly 10 to 16 km from town along the Kinniya road, through China Bay and Cloppenburg.
- Nilaveli and Pigeon Island. Nilaveli is about 14 km north. Boats to Pigeon Island leave from its beach, and the island is closed for the monsoon.
- Whale watching. Dawn boats run from about March or April to August or September, with a 5 to 6 hour round trip.
Practical tips
Hire a car with a driver for the inland sites, and fix the price and return time before you leave. Carry water and cash in rupees. Check current government travel advice and stay on established roads and paths.
