Sights of Stepantsminda and Dariali Gorge
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel to areas right beside their administrative boundary lines. The US State Department rates Georgia as a whole Level 1 and the two occupied regions Level 4, Do Not Travel. South Ossetia lies close to the Truso Valley, so stay on the marked track, carry your passport and never walk toward the boundary. Mountain rescue can be slow, so hire a guide for glacier and summit terrain.
The sights around Stepantsminda are spread along the Georgian Military Highway and its side valleys, and most are a short drive from the main square. Payment is in Georgian lari (GEL), and drivers and small sites expect cash.
Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek
A 14th-century church stands at 2,170 m on a ridge above Gergeti village, with the glaciated cone of Kazbek behind it. Reach it by the paved road, on a shared Delica from the main square for about 15 to 25 GEL a head or 60 to 100 GEL a vehicle, or on foot in 1 to 1.5 hours up from the trailhead. Entry is free. It is an active church, so keep voices low, and cover shoulders and knees. Women cover their hair and wear a long skirt, men remove hats and wear long trousers, and aprons, scarves and wraps are available at the door. Photography and video inside are not allowed, and drones are banned. The road is sometimes damaged by landslides.
Dariali Gorge and the Archangels Monastery
North of town the Tergi river runs through the narrow granite canyon of Dariali Gorge. The Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, about 10 km from Stepantsminda near the Larsi border post, was begun in 2005 and opened in part in 2011. Entry is free, and a visit takes about 30 to 40 minutes. It is a working church, so dress modestly. Larsi is an international border crossing into Russia, and flying drones near the post is prohibited.
Sno stone heads
In the Sno valley, on the road toward Juta, stone heads carved by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili stand beside the road. They show portraits of Georgian writers and historical figures. Ask your driver how far the heads are from town before you plan the stop.
Big Gveleti waterfall
The trail starts about 7 km north of Stepantsminda. The big fall is about 30 m high and takes 15 to 45 minutes to reach depending on where you begin, finishing with a scramble over rocky steps. A smaller fall is 10 to 15 minutes from the fork. Allow 1.5 to 3 hours for the visit, and wear sturdy footwear.
Kazbegi Museum
The museum occupies the house of the writer Alexander Kazbegi, at Kazbegi Street 2 in the town centre. Listed hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30 with a 5 GEL ticket, but the museum has been reported as temporarily closed, so check before you go.
Truso Valley
The valley track leads to Zakagori Fortress after roughly 18 to 22 km return, past orange mineral terraces. Border guards are posted at the fortress, so carry your passport, and never approach the boundary line beyond it.
On the road in
Visitors from Tbilisi pass Ananuri fortress, about 70 km south of Stepantsminda, on the way up. The drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours in total.
