Romantic Walvis Bay: Lagoon Dinners, Dunes
Walvis Bay is a working port rather than a resort strip, so a romantic stay here is built around light, wildlife and the desert instead of beach lounging. The Atlantic is cold with rip currents and the lagoon is a shallow tidal mudflat, so neither is a place to swim. What the town does well is golden-hour drives, dinners over the lagoon, a night at a lighthouse lodge and sparkling wine on the water. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand. Fog is common and often burns off by midday, so bring warm layers for evenings.
Golden hour at Sandwich Harbour
Sandwich Harbour is about 55 km south of Walvis Bay, and the late-day light on the dunes and the lagoon is its best feature. Mola Mola Safaris lists a Golden Hour half-day tour, and Sandwich Harbour 4x4 offers a sunset photography trip. The site is visited only with a registered operator since 1 April 2026, and the tide sets the route. A half-day tour typically costs roughly N$2,700 per adult, plus park fees set by the ministry. Some tours serve oysters and sparkling wine in the dunes. Treat that as an operator inclusion rather than a standard feature, and ask what is on the menu when you book.
A night at Pelican Point Lodge
Pelican Point Lodge stands beside the lighthouse on the sandspit, about 32 km from town, with nine to ten suites. Getting there means a 4x4 or an escorted self-drive. Ask the lodge for rates and for how to get there. Expect wind, sea noise and a long horizon, which is what makes the stay different from a city hotel.
Dinner by the water
The Raft is a restaurant on stilts over the lagoon, reached along a pier or by boat, and it is a pleasant spot at sunset. Anchors at the Jetty is on Atlantic Street at the Waterfront and is listed as open from 07:30 to 22:00. Check hours and book ahead for evenings.
Morning cruise with a toast
Catamaran cruises leave the Waterfront at about 09:00 and run 3 to 4 hours. Oysters and sparkling wine are commonly served. You can expect seals, pelicans and dolphins, and between about July and November whales may appear, though no operator can promise them. Roughly N$1,200 to 1,500 per adult is the range to expect, so check the current rate. Keep your distance from the animals and never touch or feed them.
A private beach braai
Mola Mola Safaris lists a beach braai at Pelican Point as a private add-on to its tours. Ask what is included, the group size and the timing, which depends on the tide and the wind.
Staying longer
Walvis Bay pairs easily with Swakopmund, 30 to 35 km north, which adds the jetty and the Mole for a sunset stroll. See the Mola Mola Safaris site for its tours and the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 site for sunset trips.
