Lika-Senj County Landmarks and Parks
Lika-Senj County has two national parks, a mountain botanical garden, a 16th century fortress, a famous birthplace and an olive grove on Pag. The sights are spread out, so group them by area. Prices are in euros.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The park is known for its chain of lakes joined by waterfalls, with Veliki Slap, at 78 metres, the tallest drop. Lake Kozjak is the largest lake and the base for the electric boat. The boat and the panoramic train are both included in the ticket and run on a timetable of about every 30 minutes.
Adult day tickets cost 10 euros from November to March, 23 euros in April, May and October, and 40 euros from June to September. Online booking is recommended, and the entrances sell tickets unless sold out. Hours vary with the season, so check the park site. Stay on the marked paths, since swimming and leaving the paths are banned.
Northern Velebit National Park
The park is usually open from early May to mid-November, depending on snow. Entrances at Babic Sica and Alan are open from 08:00 to 16:00, and a one-day ticket costs 7 euros.
The Velebit Botanical Garden lies near the Zavizan hut at about 1,480 m. It holds about 300 plant species, including Degenia velebitica, and takes about an hour to walk. June and July are the best months to go.
The Kuca Velebita visitor centre in Krasno has an exhibition that opens at 08:30, with last entry at 15:00.
Senj and Nehaj Fortress
Nehaj Fortress was built in 1558 under Ivan Lenkovic, and its walls are 2 to 3.3 metres thick. It stands above the town of Senj. Opening hours and ticket price: check with Gradski muzej Senj on +385 53 881 141. The town museum runs the fortress.
Smiljan
Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, and the birth house and memorial park form the Tesla Memorial Centre, which opened on 10 July 2006. From April to October it opens Tuesday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. In winter it closes earlier. It is closed on Mondays and on holidays. An adult ticket costs 10 euros.
Lun olive garden
On northern Pag, near Novalja, the Lun olive garden has about 1,500 wild olives across 24 hectares. Pag is reached by the Prizna to Zigljen ferry, about 20 minutes.
