Family Activities in Utrecht
Utrecht is a good city for children: compact, mostly flat and full of museums built for hands-on play. Several of the best need a booked slot, so reserve before you arrive. Prices are in euros, and card or phone payment is standard.
For toddlers and preschoolers
The Nijntje Museum at Agnietenstraat 2 celebrates Miffy, the rabbit created in 1955 by Dick Bruna, who was born and worked in Utrecht. It reopened in 2023 after an expansion that doubled its size to about 1,500 square metres of play space, aimed at ages 2 to 6. Online booking is compulsory and tickets are not sold at the door. Reserve at nijntjemuseum.nl . It stands directly opposite the Centraal Museum, where children up to 12 enter free.
Trains and music machines
The Spoorwegmuseum at Maliebaanstation 16 is the national railway museum and a favourite with families. Entry is 19.50 euros from age 4, and under-4s are free. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, plus Mondays in school holidays. An NS train runs about hourly from Utrecht Centraal to the museum’s own stop, and Museumkaart holders still need a free reserved slot. Details are at spoorwegmuseum.nl .
Museum Speelklok at Steenweg 6 shows self-playing instruments, and children enjoy the hourly tour at half past the hour when large street organs play. A scavenger hunt led by Organ Monkey Toetsie keeps younger visitors busy. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Prices are on the museum site .
Science and gardens
The Universiteitsmuseum Utrecht at Lange Nieuwstraat 106 reopened in September 2023. Its five interactive zones let children run experiments, look at animal skeletons and explore human biology. It is attached to the Oude Hortus, a botanical garden laid out in 1723 with 18th-century greenhouses, giant water lilies and a ginkgo planted around 1730. Check the museum’s site for current hours and prices.
Outdoors
Griftpark, on a former gasworks site north of the centre, has a large adventure playground with water pumps, a concrete skate bowl and a children’s farm. Entry is free and the park is open daily. Wilhelminapark has a playground and a restaurant.
Castle day out
Kasteel de Haar in Haarzuilens suits older children who like fairy-tale towers. Castle and gardens cost 21.50 euros for adults and 13.50 for ages 4 to 12, under-4s free. Gardens alone cost 5 euros for a child, and the gardens need no booking.
Animals
Utrecht has no zoo. The nearest are DierenPark Amersfoort, 15 minutes by train and then a bus, and Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, about 35 minutes by train.
Tips for parents
The Dom Tower climb is 465 steps and is not suited to strollers, and the guided tour charges 8.50 euros for ages 4 to 12. DOMunder is recommended from age 8. The lower canal wharves have no railings, so keep children well back from the water. Cyclists have right of way in the red cycle lanes, and pushchairs should stay on the pavement.
