Day Trips from Tunis, Sousse and Tozeur
Safety note, 31 October 2026. Tunisia is at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) with the US State Department. The UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026) lists areas where it advises against all travel or all but essential travel, mostly along the Algerian and Libyan borders and around Kasserine. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking; some border and military areas are closed to tourists. Every trip below stays on the main tourist circuit.
Pick one base and stay within range
Day trips work in Tunisia when you choose one base and keep the other half of the country for another day. Tozeur, Douz and Djerba are not day trips from Tunis. Tozeur is about 450 km south, six to seven hours each way by road, and Djerba is more than 500 km away. Use Tunis, Sousse or Tozeur as your base instead.
From Tunis
Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, half day. The TGM light rail runs from Tunis Marine to the Carthage stations and on to Sidi Bou Said. Give Carthage about two hours for the Antonine Baths and Byrsa Hill, then walk or ride on to Sidi Bou Said for the clifftop streets and mint tea. The Bardo National Museum is a separate stop in the western suburb of Le Bardo, reached by Tunis Metro line 4, and it is closed on Mondays.
Dougga and Testour, full day. Dougga is about 105 km south-west of Tunis, roughly an hour and a half to two hours by car. Testour, on the way, is a town founded by Andalusian refugees and known for the clock on its Great Mosque, which runs counter-clockwise. Allow about three hours at Dougga.
Bizerte and Ichkeul, full day. Bizerte is about 65 km north, around an hour on the A4. Spend the morning at the Old Port, the Ottoman kasbah and the medina. In the afternoon, visit Ichkeul National Park, about 25 km south-west of the city. The best birding is from November to February.
Cap Bon, full day. A drive round the peninsula takes in Nabeul, known for its pottery and Friday market, the fortress at Kelibia, the Punic town of Kerkouane, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the quarries at El Haouaria.
From Sousse or Monastir
El Jem, half day. The amphitheatre is about 65 km south of Sousse, reached by SNCFT train or louage. Spend two hours in the arena and underground galleries and an hour in the museum nearby. Check the SNCFT timetable at sncft.com.tn, because the main-line timetable runs from 1 September 2026 to 30 June 2027.
Kairouan, half day. Louage vehicles go from Sousse to Kairouan, about 60 km west. Visit the Great Mosque courtyard in the morning, when it is open, and the Aghlabid Basins, then browse the carpet shops in the medina.
Mahdia, half day. Mahdia is about 45 km south and is served by the Sahel Metro from Sousse. See the Borj El Kebir fortress, the Skifa Kahla gate and the seafront cemetery on the promontory.
From Tozeur
Chott el Djerid and Douz, full day. The drive of about 125 km crosses the raised P16 causeway over the salt pan. Stay on the road and use the roadside stops. Douz is the place for an afternoon camel ride among the dunes, with a licensed local operator.
Mountain oases. Chebika, Tamerza and Mides need a 4WD or a tour driver. Tamerza and Mides sit on the Algerian border and may lie inside the FCDO essential-travel band. Check the live advice map and go only with a licensed Tozeur operator.
Practical tips
Pay in dinars and keep exchange slips. Louage fares are fixed but not posted online, so ask at the station. Cover shoulders and knees at mosques.
