Romantic Trincomalee at Sunrise and Sunset
Slow days on the east coast
Trincomalee suits couples who like quiet beaches, early mornings and long views over the water. It faces east, so the sun rises over the sea, and the harbour side and the clifftops catch the evening light. Come between about May and September, when the sea is calm. From roughly October or November to February or March the north-east monsoon brings rough water and rain.
Sunrise at Nilaveli
Nilaveli lies about 14 km north of town and is the quieter, wider strip of sand, with beach resorts along it. It is the place to walk the shoreline at dawn before the day warms up. Uppuveli, about 5 to 6 km north of town, is livelier, with guesthouses and small cafes. Swimming conditions change with the season, so ask your hotel before going in, as surf and rip tides are dangerous at some times of year.
Sunset at Swami Rock and Fort Frederick
Walk Fort Frederick in the late afternoon, when the heat eases and spotted deer graze beside the road. Please do not feed them. The road continues up to Swami Rock, where a cliff viewpoint looks out over the bay. The viewpoint is known as Lover’s Leap, after a local legend about a Dutch official’s daughter. An active Hindu shrine stands on the rock, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, speak quietly and follow the signs about photography. Part of the fort is used by the military, so keep your camera away from installations.
A dawn boat for two
Whale-watching boats leave around 06:00 to 06:30 and go about 8 nautical miles east. The season runs from about March or April to August or September. Trinco Blu by Cinnamon runs trips with in-house naturalists. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the early light on calm water is worth the effort on its own. Ask whether the boat turns its engine off near animals.
Snorkelling together at Pigeon Island
Boats leave from Nilaveli beach for the marine national park, and the crossing takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Two charges apply, a park ticket and a boat fare, and prices vary, so confirm both. The island is closed during the north-east monsoon. Do not stand on or touch the coral, and do not chase or feed sharks, turtles or fish.
A quiet swim at Marble Beach
Marble Beach lies roughly 10 to 16 km from town. The Sri Lanka Air Force runs it, so bring your passports for the ID check. Entry costs a small amount, reported at LKR 20 to LKR 100. The water is calm for most of the day, but look at the sea before you swim.
Choosing where to stay
Resorts and guesthouses sit along Uppuveli and Nilaveli, with Nilaveli Beach Hotel, Anilana and Trinco Blu by Cinnamon among the names. Check current status before booking. If a beach dinner appeals, ask your hotel whether it can arrange a table on the sand. Choose a beachfront room if you want to watch the sunrise from your door.
