Day Trips from Utrecht
Utrecht is the rail hub of the Netherlands, so most day trips start with a short train ride from Utrecht Centraal. This guide sorts them by how much time they take. Transit is paid by tapping a contactless bank card or phone on entering and leaving, with no paper ticket needed. For bus times on the last leg, check 9292.nl.
Under 30 minutes by train
Amersfoort is 13 to 15 minutes away on a direct NS Intercity, with trains every 10 to 15 minutes. It keeps an intact medieval circular centre. Look for the Koppelpoort, a land-and-water gate from 1425, and the Muurhuizen, houses built on the foundations of the first 13th-century city wall. The Mondriaanhuis is the birthplace museum of Piet Mondrian, who was born here in 1872, and Museum Flehite covers local history. Half a day is enough.
Amsterdam is 27 minutes by direct Intercity, with trains every 10 to 15 minutes at all hours. It needs a full day, and many visitors return to Utrecht for the night.
Kasteel de Haar
The castle is in Haarzuilens, about 12 km west of central Utrecht and inside the province of Utrecht. The medieval castle was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style between 1892 and 1912 by Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum, for Baron Étienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt and his wife Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. English-style gardens surround it.
Take the NS train to Vleuten, about 10 minutes, then a local bus or a bike. Cycling from the centre is roughly 12 km on flat paths. The castle opens daily from 11:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:15) and the gardens from 9:00 to 17:30. Castle and gardens cost 21.50 euros for adults and 13.50 for children 4 to 12. Gardens alone are 12.50 from April to October and 8 from November to March. Parking is 7.50. Reserve castle slots at kasteeldehaar.nl , since they can sell out.
Oudewater and the Witches’ Weighhouse
Oudewater lies about 25 km south-west of the city and is reached by regional bus. The Heksenwaag at Leeuweringerstraat 2 dates from 1482. In 1545 Emperor Charles V gave Oudewater the right to issue certificates of natural body weight, and accused witches travelled from across Europe to be weighed. Today visitors can step on the old scale and receive a certificate. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 between 1 April and 1 November, and on Mondays in July and August as well. See heksenwaag.nl for current details.
Soesterberg and the Utrecht Hill Ridge
The Nationaal Militair Museum sits on the former Soesterberg air base, 15 km east of Utrecht. Tanks, V2 rockets and fighter jets stand under a large glass-and-steel roof. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Museumkaart holders enter free. Take a train to Driebergen-Zeist or Amersfoort and a bus from there.
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is a ridge of pine forest and heath. Its Pyramide van Austerlitz is a 36 m earth pyramid with an obelisk, built in 1804 in 27 days by soldiers under General Marmont. The park is free and climbing the monument costs about 3.50 euros.
Trips that take too long
The Zeeland beaches at Domburg and Vlissingen are 2.5 to 3 hours each way by public transport. Hoge Veluwe National Park is 60 km east in Gelderland and works best by car.
