Trincomalee Trip Plans for Several Days
When to go and how to get there
For the sea, plan a visit between about May and September. The north-east monsoon, roughly October or November to February or March, brings rough water and closes Pigeon Island, so a trip in December or January is a wet one on this coast. Whale watching runs from about March or April to August or September.
Colombo is about 260 km away by road. Direct buses leave Bastian Mawatha about every 30 minutes, take about 7 hours, and cost about LKR 850 to 950. One daily train leaves Colombo Fort and takes about 6 to 8 hours. From Kandy, allow most of a day by road.
Three nights on the coast
- Day 1. Arrive and settle in at Uppuveli or Nilaveli. In the late afternoon walk Fort Frederick, where spotted deer roam, then continue to Swami Rock for the view. Koneswaram Kovil is an active shrine, so dress modestly.
- Day 2. Take a dawn whale-watching boat, a 5 to 6 hour trip. Rest in the afternoon.
- Day 3. Take a boat from Nilaveli to Pigeon Island for snorkelling. Pay the park ticket and the boat fare, and keep clear of the coral. In the late afternoon visit Kanniya Hot Springs or Marble Beach.
Adding the elephants and ancient sites
Kaudulla and Minneriya are about 2 hours inland, and Minneriya peaks from August to September while Kaudulla is busiest from about September or October to November or December. Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa lie about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. If you want one of them, sleep near Sigiriya or Habarana for a night rather than driving back the same day.
A simple extension: spend two nights on the coast, go inland on the third day for the elephant safari, sleep near Sigiriya, climb the rock early the next morning, and carry on to Kandy or Colombo.
Learning to dive
Divinguru Nilaveli is a PADI 5 Star IDC resort, and other dive centres operate in Nilaveli and Uppuveli. A PADI Open Water course takes about 3 to 4 days, so build it into a stay of at least 5 nights. Dive in the calm season, and check each centre’s current status before you book.
Before you go
Sri Lanka’s currency is the rupee, at roughly LKR 300 to 320 per US dollar in 2026. Carry cash for small vendors. Check current government travel advice, and stay on established roads and paths.
