Romantic Yerevan: Wine, Opera, Cascade
Travel advice as of October 2026: the FCDO advises against travel within 5 km of the Azerbaijan border and on the M16/H26 road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan. Dilijan sits outside those areas, but do not use that road or visit the villages near Ijevan.
Yerevan suits couples who like evenings: wine on a lively street, the opera, city lights from the Cascade, and an easy day out to wine country. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov for current Armenia advice before you go.
A wine evening on Saryan Street
Saryan Street is the centre of the city’s wine bars. In Vino, at 6 Martiros Saryan Street, was the first wine bar and shop here and carries over 1,000 labels. Book a table for Friday and Saturday evenings, when the street is busiest. Wine Days take place here in early June, and the Areni Wine Festival is in early October.
The Opera and Ballet Theatre
The Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre faces Freedom Square. Ticket prices vary by production, from about 1,000 to 5,000 AMD at the low end up to 15,000 to 28,000 AMD for headline productions. Dress smartly. Current listings and the box office are at opera.am .
The Cascade at dusk
Walk up the Cascade as the light drops and the city lights come on across the pink tuff. The staircase has about 570 steps, the escalators inside usually run daily from 08:00 to 20:00, and the outdoor terraces stay open at all times. Cascade Royal sits at the top of the stair. Mount Ararat is visible by day or in clear early morning light, so save it for a morning walk.
Lovers’ Park
Lovers’ Park is a free Japanese-style park designed by the Swiss landscape architect Pierre Rambach, and it opened in 2008. It suits a quiet walk in the middle of the day.
Republic Square fountains
From spring to early autumn the fountains put on an evening show that begins at about 21:00. It is free to watch, which makes it an easy end to a dinner out.
A day in Areni wine country
Areni is about 110 to 115 km from the city, so allow most of a day. Hin Areni has tasting rooms, and the Areni Wine Factory was founded in 1994. Tasting prices vary, so confirm them when you book. Keep to the main road and do not stop in Yeraskh village. Areni-1 nearby is an archaeological excavation with an ancient wine press and not a tasting room.
Dilijan for a night
Dilijan is 1.5 to 2 hours from Yerevan, with the Haghartsin monastery nearby and the restored craft street of Sharambeyan in town. Flying Ostrich by Dolmama, at 6 Sayat Nova Street, is a Dilijan restaurant with mixed reviews, so read recent comments before you book.
