Polis Sightseeing: Museum, Baths, Harbour
Polis Chrysochous is a small town on Chrysochou Bay, in the Paphos District of the Republic of Cyprus, about 35 km from Paphos. Its sights are few and close together. The currency is the euro and traffic drives on the left.
Local Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe
The museum stands at Leoforos Makariou III 26 in Polis. VisitCyprus lists admission as free, with opening hours of 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturday, and the museum is closed on Sunday and public holidays. Some sites give a 08:30 opening and a ticket of EUR 1.70 or EUR 2.50, so check the posted hours at the door.
It has two rooms and an atrium. The first room runs in chronological order from the Neolithic to the Medieval period, and the second holds finds from the local necropolis. There are no developed outdoor ruins for visitors, only excavation plots, so the museum is the place to see what Marion-Arsinoe left behind.
Baths of Aphrodite
The Baths of Aphrodite lie about 11 km west of Polis, beyond Latchi harbour. They are a small grotto pool and a botanical garden, shaded by an old fig tree, at the start of the Aphrodite and Adonis nature trails. Entry is free. Visitors are asked not to swim or wade in the pool. Allow longer if you start a trail from here.
Latchi harbour
Latchi is a working fishing harbour a short drive west of Polis. It has fish tavernas along the water and the kiosks that sell Blue Lagoon boat trips. Visit around meal time, when the tavernas are open.
Agios Andronikos church
Agios Andronikos in Polis is a 16th-century church that was once a mosque, with Byzantine frescoes. A March 2023 government notice closed it to the public, so check access before you go. The exterior can be seen from the street.
Seeing the coast from the sea
A Blue Lagoon cruise from Latchi passes the Akamas coast and the Baths of Aphrodite from the water, which is the easiest way to see the shoreline without a 4x4. A basic cruise lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours. Booking sites show roughly 25 to 30 US dollars per adult.
Getting around
Bus 645 runs between Paphos Karavella and Polis in about an hour, roughly hourly, for about EUR 2. Route 622 goes from Polis through Prodromi and Latchi to the Baths of Aphrodite. Check pafosbuses.com or call +357 8000 5588 for current times.
Polis is a quiet base, and larger sights such as Kato Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings are in Paphos, about 35 km away.
