Day Trips from Nessebar
Nessebar is a good base for short trips along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The towns to the south and north are within about 100 km, buses and taxis serve most of them, and the Old Town itself needs only half a day. Distances below are rounded, and prices are in euros.
Sozopol
Sozopol lies about 70 km away by road via Burgas, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. Its old town has a small Archaeological Museum and a walk along the Southern Fortress Wall. In season, resellers sell a guided fast-ferry day by catamaran, about an hour each way, which leaves from Nessebar harbour with bus pick-ups from the resorts. The ferry runs seasonally and crossings can be cancelled in rough weather. The wreck of the Mopang, a US steamer sunk by a mine in 1921 near St Ivan Island, lies 30 to 35 m down and is a technical dive rather than a casual swim.
Castle of Ravadinovo
This castle near Sozopol is sometimes called In Love with the Wind. An adult ticket was reported at about 15 euros, children under 7 enter free, and discounts exist with ID. Opening hours differ between sources, so check before you drive out. Some visitors find it kitsch and others find it enchanting.
Pomorie
Pomorie is about 20 km from Nessebar. The Salt Museum stands on the shore of Lake Pomorie, and the dome tomb is a Thracian-Roman tomb from the 2nd to 4th century AD. The lake is known for its salt and mud. Opening hours vary by source, and prices have been seen only in the former currency, about 1.53 euros for an adult at the museum, so confirm both on the day.
Burgas
Burgas is about 35 km away and has the Sea Garden (Morska Gradina), a seaside park. Reach it by bus through Sunny Beach and the intercity bus station.
Cape Emine and Irakli
Irakli beach is a wild, protected beach about 30 to 32 km north of Nessebar. It sits inside a protected area. Obzor lies a further 12 km on. Cape Emine is the headland near this stretch of coast. Follow the red-flag rule here too, and avoid swimming alone.
Varna
Varna is about 100 km north and makes a long day. Its Archaeological Museum holds the Varna gold, and the city has Roman baths.
Too far for a day trip
Sofia and Plovdiv are too far for a return day trip from Nessebar.
Airport and transfers
Burgas Airport is about 35 to 40 km from Nessebar, 30 to 40 minutes by road. No direct airport bus runs to Nessebar. A city bus goes to Burgas South Bus Station, then an intercity bus continues to Nessebar or Sunny Beach, taking 60 to 90 minutes in total. A taxi or private transfer costs about 25 to 45 euros.
