Day Trips From Polis, Cyprus
Polis Chrysochous is a good base for day trips in the north-west of Cyprus. The currency is the euro and traffic drives on the left. Paphos airport is the nearest airport, and Paphos town is about 35 km away.
Akamas peninsula and the Baths of Aphrodite
The Akamas starts west of Polis, past Latchi harbour. The Baths of Aphrodite are about 11 km west of Polis and sit at the start of the Aphrodite and Adonis nature trails. The Baths are a small grotto pool and botanical garden under an old fig tree, and visitors are asked not to swim or wade in the pool. Entry is free.
From the Baths you can walk the 7.5 km Aphrodite trail (3 to 4 hours) or go on by boat or 4x4 toward Fontana Amorosa. Tarmac ends near the Baths, and the track beyond has potholes, loose stone and steep drops. A normal rental car is not suited to it, and most rental contracts exclude unpaved roads. Use a 4x4 whose contract allows it, a guided tour, a bike or a boat from Latchi. Access is uncontrolled for all vehicles, and the road has been closed for roadworks before, so check ahead.
Pomos
Pomos is a coastal village with a small fishing harbour. The Dragon Cave can be reached by boat or by steps from a small car park. Kanalli is a pebble beach under steep cliffs. Pomos lies roughly 20 to 25 km from Polis, so allow time for the drive.
Lara Bay
Lara Bay is a protected turtle nesting beach, reached by a rough track, usually from the Pegeia side. You need a 4x4 or a tour, and most tours start in Paphos. Nesting runs about June to August and hatching about August to late September, and sightings are never guaranteed. From early June to late September there are no umbrellas, sunbeds, tents or caravans, and nobody may stay on the beach from one hour before sunset. Do not drive on the sand, touch turtles, or use lights or drones.
Paphos
Paphos is its own day trip, about 35 km away. Kato Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings are there, not in Polis. Bus 645 runs between Paphos Karavella and Polis in about an hour, roughly hourly, for about EUR 2. Check pafosbuses.com or call +357 8000 5588 for times.
Where not to go
The Avakas Gorge trail has been closed to visitors since 6 December 2025. It lies on the Pegeia and Kathikas side, not at Polis. Check with the Forestry Department before any visit.
