Nessebar with Kids
Nessebar suits families who like a mix of beach time, a water park and short easy sightseeing. Distances are small, and the Old Town can be covered in an afternoon with children. Most family activities run from late May or June to September. Prices are in euros.
Water parks
Aquapark Nessebar is at Ravda, KV Aurelia 9, and opens from late May to September. Tickets depend on height, and children under 90 cm enter free. Online adult tickets start from about 26 to 35 euros, so check the official site for the current price list and opening dates. Shuttle buses run from signed stops in Ravda, Sveti Vlas, Nessebar and Sunny Beach, which saves a taxi fare with tired children.
Action Aquapark is a second water park in Sunny Beach. Look at its own site before planning around it.
South Beach
South Beach lies between New Nessebar and Ravda. The sea is shallow at the water’s edge, which suits families who stay close to their children, but it is still the Black Sea, with rip currents and undertows. Never leave children unwatched in the water, even where it looks calm. Lifeguards work only until about 18:00, and a red flag means nobody should swim. Children should stay out of the surf after lifeguard hours, whatever the weather looks like.
Boat trip with lunch
Captain Jack’s half-day boat tour with lunch leaves from Nessebar South Port at 09:20, and sellers describe a pirate theme that children enjoy. The adult price is about 44 euros. Check the child price and the schedule on the seller’s page, since both change by date.
Getting around with children
Public bus line 1 runs between Sunny Beach and Old Nessebar from early June on the summer schedule, every 10 to 20 minutes and taking about 15 minutes. A fare is about 1 euro in cash. A tourist train, which runs on the road rather than on rails, costs around 2 to 3 euros and gives younger children a rest from walking.
Old Town with children
Children pay about half the adult price at the museums and churches, and the Old Town has free sights too, such as the western walls and gate and the ruins of St Sophia. The wooden windmill at the entrance is a quick photo stop. Cobbles are uneven and slippery when wet, so pushchairs are hard work and flat shoes are best. Cars are not allowed on the peninsula without a permit, so the lanes are quiet.
Snacks
Bakeries in New Nessebar sell banitsa, a cheese pastry, and mekitsi, fried dough. They make an easy breakfast before a beach morning.
Safety checklist
- Swim only when the flag is not red and a lifeguard is on duty.
- Teach children to swim parallel to the shore if a current pulls them.
- Take shade and water to the beach, as the day can be hot in July and August.
