Family Days Out in Lika-Senj County
Lika-Senj County suits families who like walking, water views and a bit of science. The big attractions publish child and family prices, and several rides are included in the ticket. Prices are in euros.
Plitvice Lakes with children
Children aged 7 to 18 pay 4 euros from November to March, 6 euros in April, May and October, and 15 euros from June to September (9 euros after the afternoon cut-off). Children under 7 enter free. The ticket includes the electric boat and the panoramic train, which saves small legs on the longer routes.
Short programmes work best with young children. Programme A is 3.5 km and takes 2 to 3 hours, and Programme E is 5.1 km and takes 2 to 3 hours. Programme B is 4 km and includes an electric-boat ride.
In winter the Lower Lakes are usually open and the Upper Lakes are usually closed until early April, so the shortest routes are also the only ones open. Dogs must be on a leash, and cycling, fishing and camping are banned.
Swimming is not allowed anywhere in the park. Plan a different stop for swim time, and keep children on the marked paths and boardwalks.
Rowing on Lake Kozjak
Rental rowing boats leave the P1 dock from 10:00 to 15:00. A boat costs 15 euros per hour and takes up to 4 people, which suits a family of four.
Tesla Centre in Smiljan
The Tesla Centre charges 6 euros for children over 7 and 20 euros for a family ticket covering two adults and their minor children. A transformer demonstration runs every hour on the hour, which is the part children usually remember. The centre is closed on Mondays and on public holidays.
Bears at Kuterevo
The Kuterevo Bear Refuge is a seasonal stop where entry is free and donations are welcome. Check opening times before the drive.
Northern Velebit National Park
A one-day family ticket costs 16 euros for up to two adults with children up to 18. The park is usually open from early May to mid-November, depending on snow, and the main entrances at Babic Sica and Alan are open from 08:00 to 16:00.
Zavratnica Cove
The cove is reached on foot from Jablanac, and park entry is 5 euros per person, with children under 7 free. Stay on the existing trails. No lifeguards are documented there, so treat it as a walk and a view.
