Day Trips Around Lika-Senj County
Lika-Senj County is large and mostly empty, so a day trip works best when it stays in one area. The main roads are the A1 motorway, the D1 through Korenica and Plitvice, and the D8 coastal road. Prices are in euros.
Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb
Zagreb to Plitvice is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road. The D1 passes both park entrances, and buses stop at Entrance 1 and Entrance 2 in each direction. Choose Programme C (8 km, 4 to 5 hours) from Entrance 1 or Programme H (8.9 km, 4 to 6 hours) from Entrance 2 for a full day. The ticket includes the electric boat and the panoramic train, which run on a timetable about every 30 minutes.
An adult day ticket costs 23 euros in April, May and October, and 40 euros from June to September (25 euros after 16:00). Buying online is recommended, and the ticket carries a date, an entrance and a time window. With an online slot you cannot enter before it and may be at most 1 hour late. Opening hours change by season, so check the current hours page.
Northern Velebit from Zavizan
A ridge walk from the Zavizan hut follows the start of the Premuzic Trail. The park is usually open from early May to mid-November, so check road and trail conditions with the park before driving up. Entry is 7 euros for one day.
Senj and Nehaj Fortress
Senj sits on the coast along the D8. Walk the historic core, then climb to Nehaj Fortress, built in 1558 under Ivan Lenkovic. Its walls are 2 to 3.3 metres thick. The town museum, Gradski muzej Senj, runs the fortress and can be reached on +385 53 881 141. Hours and ticket price: check with the museum before you go.
Smiljan and Gospic
The Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre in Smiljan is a short drive from Gospic, the county seat. It is closed on Mondays and on public holidays, so avoid Mondays. Adult tickets are 10 euros, and the transformer demonstration starts on the hour.
Novalja and Zrce by ferry
In summer the Jadrolinija ferry from Prizna to Zigljen takes about 20 minutes. One ticket is valid for any departure that day, and the line runs all year on a reduced winter timetable. From Zigljen it is a short drive to Novalja and the beach clubs at Zrće. Strong bura winds can stop sailings.
Wind and roads
The Senj coast gets violent bura gusts. In bad events the D8, the bridges and the ferries limit high-sided vehicles, trailers and motorcycles, or close entirely. Check HAK road reports and the DHMZ forecast before driving.
