Guided Tours and Ranger Days in Lika-Senj
Organised tours are a small part of what Lika-Senj County offers. Most attractions are parks and memorials that run their own guiding, and the rules differ at each one. Individual visitors normally walk the marked routes on their own, while guides are mainly arranged for groups. Prices are in euros.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Guided tours at Plitvice are for groups of 15 or more. A half-day tour of up to 4 hours costs 120 euros, and a full-day tour of 5 to 6 hours costs 170 euros. One guide can lead up to 50 people, and the tour should be reserved in advance. Group entry tickets have slightly lower rates than individual ones, and groups of 15 or more give the park 2 days of notice.
Solo travellers and small parties have a simple alternative: the park’s marked programmes (A, B, C, E, F, H, K1 and K2) are signed, so a guide is not needed to follow them. The ticket already includes the electric boat and the panoramic train.
Northern Velebit National Park
The park sells group guiding at 120 euros for a half day and 150 euros for a full day. It also offers a “Day with a ranger”: an off-road vehicle trip with a park ranger for up to 4 people. It costs 60 euros per adult and 30 euros per child. Groups must give the park 7 days of notice, so book before you arrive rather than on the day.
The park is usually open from early May to mid-November, depending on snow, so ranger days fit that window. A one-day park ticket costs 7 euros.
Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre, Smiljan
Groups of 15 or more can book a guided tour at 20 euros in Croatian or 30 euros in English. Individual visitors do not need a tour, because the centre runs a transformer demonstration every hour on the hour during the day. Adult entry is 10 euros, and the centre is closed on Mondays.
What is not on offer
Commercial wildlife-watching tours are not sold in the county. Wildlife stays part of the park experience: a bear refuge at Kuterevo takes visitors in season, with free entry and donations welcome, so check opening times first.
Tips for booking
- Groups: contact the park or museum directly, and ask what the notice period is.
- Language: guided tours at the Tesla Centre cost more in English, so confirm the language when you book.
- Season: the Upper Lakes at Plitvice are usually closed in winter, and Northern Velebit is shut for much of the year.
