Walks Around St. Moritz and the Lake
Walking in St. Moritz costs nothing, needs no booking and fits any season. The routes below are all on public paths. Lifts and funiculars cost extra, and their prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).
Lake St. Moritz loop
A path runs all the way round Lake St. Moritz. Allow about an hour at a relaxed pace. It is free and needs no ticket. In winter the lake freezes and hosts events such as snow polo and White Turf racing. Stay on officially marked routes, and follow any closures posted by the municipality.
Staz forest and Lej da Staz
A forest walk leads to Lej da Staz, a small lake. Distances depend on the route you choose, so check a local map before you set out and wear shoes with good grip.
Muottas Muragl panoramas
In summer the funicular to Muottas Muragl (CHF 42.50 return in 2026) opens panoramic walks at 2,456 m. In winter there are marked winter walking paths as well, and the same mountain operator lists them. Opening dates and conditions are on mountains.ch . The funicular runs until 23:00 in season, so a late walk back to the station at sunset is practical.
Morteratsch glacier trail
The trail from Morteratsch station toward the glacier is free. Take the train from St. Moritz, and allow about 6 km round trip at most. Stay behind the warning ropes and out of the ice cave.
Lifts for walkers
Summer returns for walkers are CHF 64 for Corvatsch, CHF 46 for Diavolezza and CHF 39 for Furtschellas. The Surlej to Murtel section alone costs CHF 46. Diavolezza runs daily until 15 November 2026. The fares for walkers are on the Corvatsch Diavolezza site .
Winter walking
Engadin St. Moritz Mountains lists winter hiking alongside sledding. Check the mountains.ch notice for the day before you go, and wear boots with a deep tread and warm layers. On the lake, follow the marked route only.
Getting to the paths
The lake loop starts in town and needs no transport. Morteratsch is a short ride on the Rhaetian Railway from St. Moritz, and the walk begins at the station. Corvatsch is reached from the Surlej valley station. Muottas Muragl is reached by its own funicular. Check rhb.ch for train times, because the winter timetable runs from 26 October to 12 December 2026.
Walking safety
Mountain weather changes fast, so carry layers. Off the marked paths, check the avalanche bulletin on whiterisk.ch in winter and hire a certified mountain guide for glacier routes.
Walking and sightseeing together
St. Moritz Dorf has Via Serlas and the Segantini Museum, and St. Moritz Bad has the Museum Engiadinais and OVAVERVA. The Leaning Tower is the surviving tower of the old Church of St. Mauritius. A morning lake loop followed by a museum visit is an easy day, as long as the museum is open that season. The Segantini Museum reopens on 10 December 2026 and the Museum Engiadinais on 6 December 2026.
