Guided Tours Around Stepantsminda
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel to areas right beside their administrative boundary lines. The US State Department rates Georgia as a whole Level 1 and the two occupied regions Level 4, Do Not Travel. South Ossetia lies close to the Truso Valley, so stay on the marked track, carry your passport and never walk toward the boundary. Mountain rescue can be slow, so hire a guide for glacier and summit terrain.
Organised tours in Stepantsminda fall into five types: a 4x4 ride to Gergeti Trinity Church, a combined sightseeing day to the north, a guided Truso Valley trip, tandem paragliding and a guided Mount Kazbek climb. Operators in town and online set their own prices, hours and group sizes, so ask what is included before you pay. Pay in Georgian lari (GEL), and carry cash for drivers and guesthouses.
4x4 Delica day tour to Gergeti
The classic short tour is a ride in a Mitsubishi Delica up the paved road to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m. A shared seat costs roughly 15 to 25 GEL, or a whole vehicle 60 to 100 GEL, and the main square is the departure point. Ask whether the driver waits while you visit, since most stops last about an hour. The church is free to enter, but it is an active church with a dress code: shoulders and knees covered, women with a covered head and a long skirt, men without hats and in long trousers. Wraps and aprons are lent at the door, and photography inside is not allowed. In snow the road can close or turn icy, so confirm the day before.
Combined Dariali, Gveleti and Gergeti day
Several operators string the northern sights together in a single day from town. Dariali Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel is about 10 km north near the Larsi border, and a visit takes 30 to 40 minutes. Big Gveleti waterfall, about 30 m tall, lies about 7 km north, with 1.5 to 3 hours needed for the trail and its rocky scramble. Add Gergeti and you have a full day. Keep drones in the bag near the border post. Read the Gveleti waterfall page for the route.
Guided Truso Valley day
A guide or driver takes you about 15 to 18 km by dirt road to the start of the Truso track, which leads to Zakagori Fortress after roughly 18 to 22 km return on mostly flat ground. Expect orange travertine terraces and cold carbonated springs along the way. Border guards are posted at Zakagori, so bring your passport. Heading beyond the fortress toward the villages above it, or toward Kelitsadi Lake, may need a free border-zone permit, so ask your operator or the border police first. Stay on the track and never approach the boundary line. A shuttle costs about 45 to 50 GEL where one runs and a taxi about 90 GEL.
Tandem paragliding
Tandem flights are listed at Stepantsminda from Dedaena Peak and at Gudauri. Fly with a certified pilot, and expect the schedule to follow the weather. Prices are quoted by each operator, so compare a few before booking.
Guided Mount Kazbek expedition
Kazbek (5,054 m) is mountaineering. A guided trip usually takes 3 to 4 days plus a spare day for weather, and some operators plan 7 to 8 days. The route goes from Gergeti and Altihut to Bethlemi Hut at about 3,650 m, then an acclimatisation day toward 4,000 m and a summit push that starts around midnight and lasts roughly 10 to 14 hours. Crampons, ice axe, harness, rope and helmet are needed on the glacier. Go with a certified guide, and plan for late June to September.
