Day Trips to and From Stepantsminda
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel to areas right beside their administrative boundary lines. The US State Department rates Georgia as a whole Level 1 and the two occupied regions Level 4, Do Not Travel. South Ossetia lies close to the Truso Valley, so stay on the marked track, carry your passport and never walk toward the boundary. Mountain rescue can be slow, so hire a guide for glacier and summit terrain.
Stepantsminda works as a base for day trips in every direction along the Georgian Military Highway, and it is also a long but possible day trip from Tbilisi. Pay for marshrutkas, Delicas and taxis in Georgian lari (GEL) cash.
From Tbilisi to Stepantsminda
The town is about 155 to 157 km north of Tbilisi, a drive of 3 to 3.5 hours each way along the Military Highway, so a same-day return leaves little time on the ground. Marshrutkas leave Tbilisi’s Didube station when full and cost about 15 GEL in cash. Return minibuses leave the main square in Stepantsminda roughly hourly from about 07:00 to 17:00. Ananuri fortress, about 70 km south of Stepantsminda, is a common stop on the way up or down.
Truso Valley to Zakagori Fortress
This is the only common day trip close to the South Ossetia boundary. The dirt road runs about 15 to 18 km via Kobi and Kvemo Okrokana, then you walk. The track to Zakagori Fortress is roughly 18 to 22 km return and 4 to 6 hours, mostly flat, and passes travertine terraces and cold carbonated springs. A shuttle costs about 45 to 50 GEL where one runs, and a taxi about 90 GEL. Border guards are posted at Zakagori, so carry your passport. Going on toward the villages above the fortress or Kelitsadi Lake may need a free border-zone permit, so ask a Stepantsminda operator or the border police. Never approach the boundary line.
Juta and Chaukhi Lake
Juta village (about 2,200 m) is 20 to 24 km from town, 30 to 40 minutes by a road that turns to dirt after the Sno turn-off. The road collapsed in June 2025, and the last 2.6 km to the village is reported closed to vehicles, so check locally before you set out. That stretch is about 40 minutes on foot. The hike to Chaukhi Lake, an artificial reservoir, covers about 13 km return from the roadblock in 4.5 to 5 hours of walking; budget 6.5 hours with stops. Streams and lakes here are glacial and not for swimming.
Gveleti and Dariali half day
Drive 7 km north to the Gveleti trailhead, then walk to the small fall (10 to 15 minutes from the fork) and the 30 m Big Gveleti (15 to 45 minutes depending on the start, ending in a scramble). Dariali Monastery lies about 10 km north, near the Larsi border, and a stop takes 30 to 40 minutes. Dress modestly there.
Gudauri over the Jvari Pass
Gudauri is the ski resort south of Stepantsminda. The road crosses the Jvari (Cross) Pass at 2,379 m, which closes to all or some vehicles in snow or avalanche risk, mostly from December to March. Check the road on the day with the Roads Department and the National Environmental Agency. The Kobi to Gudauri cable car can stand in when the road is shut, but it runs seasonally: about 18 July to 15 September in summer 2026, and from 20 December in winter, with maintenance closures between.
