Black Sea Coast Loops from Nessebar
Nessebar has no set programme of multi-day tours. A longer trip here means a route you plan yourself, using intercity buses or a hire car, and sleeping in one or two other towns along the coast. The Old Town itself needs half a day to a full day, so most visitors treat Nessebar as the start or end of a loop. Distances below are rounded, and each stop should be planned around local bus times.
Southern coast loop
- Pomorie, about 20 km south, has the Salt Museum on Lake Pomorie and a Thracian-Roman dome tomb.
- Burgas, about 35 km away, has the Sea Garden (Morska Gradina) and the regional bus station.
- Sozopol, about 70 km by road via Burgas, has an old town, an Archaeological Museum and a walk on the Southern Fortress Wall.
- Ropotamo and Primorsko lie further south. The Beglik Tash sanctuary near Primorsko is a possible stop, so check its entry terms at the site.
- Sinemorets sits at the mouth of the Veleka river, near the far end of the southern coast.
Two nights in Sozopol, with a day in Burgas or Pomorie on the way, fits this loop.
Northern coast loop
- Cape Emine and Irakli beach, about 30 to 32 km north, is a wild beach in a protected area.
- Obzor is a further 12 km along the coast.
- Varna, about 100 km north, has an Archaeological Museum with the Varna gold and Roman baths.
- Balchik and Cape Kaliakra lie beyond Varna. Kaliakra is known for its cliffs, and mussel farms operate in Kaliakra bay.
A night in Varna works well, with a second night near Balchik or Kaliakra if you have time.
Wine route
The Pomorie area, Karnobat and Sliven form a wine route inland. Plan it as a road trip, and check each winery’s visiting hours directly, because opening times for these stops change from season to season.
Planning tips
- Sea conditions change fast. Follow flag signals, and never swim under a red flag.
- Burgas Airport is about 35 to 40 km from Nessebar. No direct airport bus runs to Nessebar, so use a city bus to Burgas South Bus Station and an intercity bus after that, or take a taxi for about 25 to 45 euros.
- Nessebar has no railway station, and the nearest train stop is Burgas.
- From mid-October to the end of March, most restaurants in Nessebar are shut and many sights close early, so winter loops need more flexibility.
Where to stay
Accommodation on a loop can be compared on Booking.com . Search the same site for Sozopol, Varna or Burgas to price the other nights.
