Guided Visits in Gjirokaster
Most guided visits in Gjirokaster are short, local and run by the people who look after the site. That suits a small town: you pay at a desk, someone walks you through, and you are back in the lanes within the hour. Fees are in Albanian lek (ALL) and paid in cash.
The Cold War Tunnel with a guide
The tunnel was built in secret in the early 1970s as a shelter and runs for about 800 m through 59 rooms. It is a serious museum about the communist period, so keep conversation low and respectful inside. The entrance is near the Municipality building by Çerçiz Topulli Square, on Rruga Gjin Zenebisi. The visit is guided, takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and costs about 200 ALL. Ask at the Tourist Information office on the square if you cannot find the door. Opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00 from April to October and 08:00 to 14:00 from November to March, as listed on the official tunnel page .
Skënduli House, shown by the family
Skënduli House dates from 1823 and is shown by members of the family who own it. Expect to pay about 200 to 300 ALL in cash. There are no fixed opening hours, so knock or ask nearby, and between November and March a pre-booked visit is the safer way in.
Zekate House
Zekate House was built in 1811 to 1812 for Beqir Zeko. The official page gives 300 ALL, or EUR 3, and says the house is open daily from 08:00 until late evening. There is no electric light inside, so go before about 16:00 to see the rooms properly. The Zekate House page has the details.
The castle with a licensed guide
The castle gate ticket is about 400 ALL, and a licensed guide can be arranged for the visit. Agree the price before you set off, because guide fees are not fixed. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the climb and the ramparts, and wear shoes with good grip on the steep, uneven stone. The castle also holds a former prison from the 20th century, including the communist period, which visitors approach quietly.
Valley tours with local operators
Local operators offer day tours through the Dropull and Drino valleys, south and east of the town. Ask each operator what is included, how long the drives are, and who pays for entry fees. Compare at least two before you pay.
