Two to Three Days Around Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay does not have a long menu of set multi-day tours. What it offers is a compact two to three day stay that pairs the port with neighbouring Swakopmund, a handful of overnight operator expeditions, one remote lodge at the lighthouse, and its role as a leg in a longer Namibia circuit. This page lays out those real options and how to fit them together. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand.
Getting here
Walvis Bay airport (WVB) has Airlink flights from Johannesburg, and one 2026 source adds Cape Town. There are no scheduled flights between Windhoek and Walvis Bay, so from the capital you drive. The road distance is roughly 390 to 400 km, about 4 to 4.5 hours. Drive on the left. The US State Department lists Namibia at Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime and health, while the UK government has no warning against travel to any part of the country.
A two to three day Walvis Bay and Swakopmund stay
Swakopmund is 30 to 35 km north of Walvis Bay, about 30 to 35 minutes by road, so the two towns work as one base. A simple plan:
- Day 1 in Walvis Bay: a catamaran cruise from the Waterfront at about 09:00, then an afternoon walk along the lagoon shore for flamingos.
- Day 2 in Walvis Bay: a guided Sandwich Harbour 4x4 half day, then a late Dune 7 climb when the sand has cooled.
- Day 3 in Swakopmund: a Living Desert tour or a drive to the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive, which needs a permit.
Fog is common and often burns off by midday, so keep the cruise and the dune trip in the morning or late afternoon and leave slack for weather.
Overnight operator expeditions
Mola Mola Safaris lists overnight expedition experiences on its website, in addition to marine, kayak and 4x4 days. Dates and prices are not published there, so ask the operator for a quote and an itinerary. Its tour list is the place to start.
Pelican Point Lodge
Pelican Point Lodge sits beside the lighthouse on the sandspit, about 32 km from town, with nine to ten suites. Guests arrive by 4x4 or on an escorted self-drive. Ask the lodge for current rates and arrival arrangements. It suits travellers who want a night beside the lighthouse and the open Atlantic.
Walvis Bay on a longer Namibia route
A typical Namibia circuit links Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, and Etosha. Sossusvlei and Etosha are the legs before and after the coast, and each needs its own overnight stay rather than a day trip from Walvis Bay.
