Family Days Out in Stepantsminda
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel to areas right beside their administrative boundary lines. The US State Department rates Georgia as a whole Level 1 and the two occupied regions Level 4, Do Not Travel. South Ossetia lies close to the Truso Valley, so stay on the marked track, carry your passport and never walk toward the boundary. Mountain rescue can be slow, so hire a guide for glacier and summit terrain.
Stepantsminda is a mountain town built around hiking and climbing, and the choice for families is short rather than long. A few outings suit children well: a ride up to Gergeti church, a quick walk to a small waterfall, a roadside stop at the Sno stone heads and, in good conditions, a gentle walk at Juta. Everything else on the mountain, from the glacier to the Kazbek climb, is for experienced adults with guides. Prices are in Georgian lari (GEL), and most local drivers want cash.
Gergeti church by Delica
The paved road to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m) lets families skip the 450 to 520 m climb. Shared Delicas leave from the main square for about 15 to 25 GEL a head or 60 to 100 GEL a vehicle, and a private vehicle leaves room for tired legs. Landslides do close sections of the road, so ask where you are staying before you go. The church is free to enter, and it is a working church: everyone covers shoulders and knees, women cover their hair, and scarves and aprons are lent at the door. Photography inside is not allowed. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours with the ride. In winter, snow and ice make the paths slippery.
Small Gveleti waterfall
About 7 km north of town, the small Gveleti fall is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the fork in the trail. The path is short and rocky, so wear shoes with grip and hold small hands. The big fall, about 30 m high, takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the start and ends in a scramble over rocky steps, which suits older children only. Watch the edges near the water, which is cold.
Sno stone heads
In the Sno valley, carved stone heads by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili stand beside the road. It makes an easy stop on the way to Juta. Ask your driver about the exact distance from town.
Lower Juta, only if the road is open
Juta (about 2,200 m) is 20 to 24 km away. The road collapsed in June 2025, and the last 2.6 km to the village is reported closed to vehicles, so the walk starts at a roadblock and is steep and unpaved. Go only if a local confirms the road is open, and turn back when children tire. The Chaukhi Lake hike is about 13 km return and takes 6.5 hours with breaks, which is too much for most small children. Keep children away from every glacial stream and lake here.
Food stops
Khinkali are the mountain dish. Eat them with your fingers: bite a small hole, drink the broth, then eat the dumpling and leave the thick knob of dough. Khabizgina, a mountain khachapuri filled with cheese and mashed potato, is another mountain dish worth trying.
