Shkodër Walking Tours: Old Town Loop
Walking Shkodër
The centre is flat and compact, so most sights are reachable on foot. Pavements are uneven in places and the castle approach is cobbled, so wear shoes with grip. Carry cash in lek for museum desks and cafes.
Old-town loop
- Start at Sheshi Demokracia (Democracy Square).
- Walk onto the Pedonale, the pedestrian Rruga Kolë Idromeno, lined with cafes and restored villas.
- Stop at the Marubi National Museum of Photography at number 32. It opens daily 09:00 to 19:00 per its visit page , and adults pay 700 ALL in cash.
- Continue into the Gjuhadol and Sarreq districts. Gjuhadol is the historic Catholic quarter of stone houses, and Sarreq is listed alongside it.
- Finish at St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Orthodox cathedral.
Leave extra time if you go inside the museum.
Interfaith walk
The Catholic cathedral, the Ebu Bekr Mosque and the Orthodox cathedral are within about 10 minutes’ walk of each other. Dress modestly, keep your voice low, and avoid entering a mosque at prayer time. The Lead Mosque is a short further walk and is free to visit.
A solemn stop
The Site of Witness and Memory stands on Bulevardi Skënderbeu 26, in the former Interior Ministry detention building. The original cells on the ground floor are part of the museum. It is a short visit that calls for quiet. Reported hours are 08:30 to 14:30, closed Sunday, so mornings are the safest time. See the map of memory sites .
On foot to Rozafa Castle
Rozafa Castle is on the same side of the Buna as the old town, so you do not need to cross the river. Plan about 2 to 3 km along the road, then the cobbled approach. Use a map for the route. Tickets are about 400 ALL, cash, and hours run roughly from 08:00 or 09:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 in summer. Check before you go.
The Old Buna Bridge, built about 1889 and pedestrian-only since 2011, is a pleasant detour. Check it is open first.
Tarabosh hike
Community routes list a 12 to 14 km round trip with 500 to 570 m of climbing. The walk starts at Shiroka, Canaj or Rozafa and is rated moderate. Carry water, start early and use an offline map.
Cycling and shore walks
A flat lakeside road runs from the city to Shiroka, 5 to 8 km, and on to Zogaj, about 12 km from the centre. Walking part of it and returning by taxi or furgon is an easy half day.
