Shkodër Sightseeing: Castle, Mosque, Museums
Sights of Shkodër
Shkodër packs a castle, three places of worship, two museums and an Ottoman bridge into a flat, walkable centre. Prices are in Albanian lek (ALL), paid in cash. Dress modestly at mosques and churches.
Rozafa Castle
The castle crowns a rock about 130 m above the Buna and Drin rivers. Illyrian walls date from the 4th or early 3rd century BC, but most of what stands is Venetian, with Ottoman additions after 1478 to 1479. St Stephen’s church became the Fatih Sultan Mehmed mosque, and a small museum sits inside. The entry fee is about 400 ALL, in cash, and the museum costs a further 150 to 200 ALL. Hours run roughly from 08:00 or 09:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 in summer and are shorter in winter, so check before you go. See the castle’s Wikipedia page .
The castle’s legend is told here as a sombre one. Three brothers built the walls, which collapsed each night. They agreed that the wife who brought lunch the next day would be walled into the foundations. Rozafa was that wife, and she asked for openings left for her eye, hand, foot and breast so she could still nurse her son.
Lead Mosque
The Lead Mosque (Xhamia e Plumbit) was built in 1773 by Mehmed Pasha Bushati, in Classical Ottoman style after Istanbul models. It is named for the lead that once covered its domes. It was closed in 1967 and survived, probably because it was a Cultural Monument from 1948. On 16 November 1990 it became the first mosque in Albania to reopen. Entry is free; dress modestly. See the mosque’s Wikipedia page .
St Stephen’s Cathedral
Kisha e Madhe was consecrated in 1867 and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shkodër-Pult. Kolë Idromeno designed it. It became a sports palace in 1967 and its towers were destroyed. The first Mass since then took place on 11 November 1990, and Pope John Paul II visited in 1993. See the cathedral’s Wikipedia page .
Orthodox cathedral and Ebu Bekr Mosque
The Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, completed about 2000, stands near Rruga Kolë Idromeno. The Ebu Bekr Mosque in the centre is free to enter outside prayer times. The three buildings are within about 10 minutes’ walk of each other.
Museums
The Marubi National Museum of Photography is at Rruga Kolë Idromeno 32 and opens daily 09:00 to 19:00 per its visit page . Adults pay 700 ALL, cash only, and entry is free for under 12s. It is in a restored historic building on the pedestrian street, not in Rozafa Castle.
The Shkodër Historical Museum at Rruga Oso Kuka 32 is in one of the few remaining Ottoman-era houses. Adult tickets are about 150 ALL. It is usually closed Monday and listed hours differ.
Mesi Bridge and the Old Buna Bridge
Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit) crosses the Kir River. It is 108 m long, has 13 arches and was built from 1768 to 1770. It lies about 5 km northeast of the centre, or 8 km by road. See the Mesi Bridge entry .
The Old Buna Bridge, built about 1889, has been pedestrian-only since 2011. Check it is open before you plan a walk across.
Site of Witness and Memory
At Bulevardi Skënderbeu 26, a museum occupies the former Interior Ministry detention building, once a Franciscan dormitory confiscated in 1946 and used until 1992. The original cells are on the ground floor. Visit in a quiet, respectful way. Hours reported are 08:30 to 14:30, closed Sunday, with tickets about 150 ALL; check before you go. See the map of memory sites .
