Things to Do in Shkodër: Lake and Old Town
Shkodër at an easy pace
Shkodër (Shkodra) is a flat, walkable city in northwest Albania, close to Lake Shkodra and the Buna River. The money is the Albanian lek (ALL). Euros are often accepted by guesthouses and tour operators, but museum desks, minibuses and small cafes want cash in lek. Albania is a normal destination; check the current UK travel advice before you go.
Evening walk on Rruga Kolë Idromeno
The pedestrian street, known as the Pedonale, is where the city comes out after dark. Cafes, restaurants and restored villas line it. It is named for Kolë Idromeno (1860 to 1939), a painter, architect and photographer born in Shkodër, who also designed St Stephen’s Cathedral. Go around sunset for the local evening stroll and stop for an espresso.
Cycling
The city is flat and many guesthouses and shops rent bikes, usually about EUR 5 to 10 or 500 to 1,000 ALL a day. Prices vary, so ask first. Two easy rides:
- Shiroka, 5 to 8 km from the centre, then on to Zogaj, about 12 km from the centre, along the lake.
- Mesi Bridge, about 8 km by road to the northeast.
A guided bike-and-boat trip to Shiroka is sold for about EUR 22.
Lake Shkodra at Shiroka and Zogaj
The Albanian side of the lake is a managed nature reserve and part of a Ramsar wetland site. About 270 bird species have been recorded. Local captains at Shiroka and Zogaj hire out boats, usually about 1,500 to 3,000 ALL per boat. Dalmatian pelicans rest on rocks near Zogaj, and reaching them takes a guided boat; see the birding notes for the Pelican Rocks . The shore is rocky, so water shoes help for swimming from the lakeside piers.
Zogaj is an old fishing village where women still weave carpets. Guesthouse rooms start at about EUR 20.
Tavë krapi by the lake
Baked carp, tavë krapi, is the lake’s signature dish. Te Zyda in Shiroka (Rr. e Radovanëve) is a simple, good, inexpensive place with a view over the water; see its listing on In Your Pocket . Guides also mention Arbri, Tempulli i Shijes, Shpija e Gjyshit and Xhaka Restaurant & Bar.
Kayak and stand-up paddleboard
A rental office in Shkodër offers kayak or SUP hire with a route briefing for the Buna, for 1 to 2 hours, priced per group at roughly USD 33. Return transport costs extra, about EUR 1 per km. Self-guided touring kayak trips on the Buna and Drin also run. These are calm, flat waters, not whitewater.
Site of Witness and Memory
On Bulevardi Skënderbeu 26, this museum occupies the former Interior Ministry detention and interrogation building, once a Franciscan dormitory confiscated in 1946 and used until 1992. The original cells on the ground floor can be visited. Visit quietly and with respect. Reported hours are 08:30 to 14:30 (Tuesday and Wednesday also 17:00 to 19:00), closed Sunday, with tickets about 150 ALL for adults. Mornings are the safest time, so check before you go. The map of memory sites describes the building.
