Walking Tours and Walks in Nelson
Nelson has guided city walks and a good set of free self-guided routes, from a short heritage loop in the centre to an 8 km boulder bank. Prices are in NZD. Weather, fire risk and tides change access to the coastal tracks, so check council notices and DOC alerts before you head out.
Guided walks
Sunny Nelson Tours runs a Nelson City Walking Tour at about 48 per adult, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours (up to 3 on some booking sites). A second tour, Nelson in a Nutshell, also runs. Departures have been listed from the i-SITE at 77 Trafalgar Street, so confirm the start point and dates with the operator. The city tour runs from January to June and October to December.
Self-guided in the centre
- Wood heritage walk. It starts at Elma Turner Library and takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
- Church Hill, the Suter and Queens Gardens. Climb Church Hill to Christ Church Cathedral (open daily from 8:30 to 19:00), walk down to The Suter Art Gallery on Bridge Street (free by koha, 9:30 to 16:30 daily) and finish in Queens Gardens. Everything on this route is free and close together.
- Centre of New Zealand. The track starts at Botanical Reserve after you cross the Maitai River, and the council allows 20 to 60 minutes to the top. The hill is a survey point named for Nelson’s 1870s Chief Surveyor, John Spence Browning. Park on Hardy Street.
Along the river and coast
Maitai River Walkway. The path leads to the swimming spots at Sunday Hole and Dennes Hole (also spelled Dennis Hole). The council tests the water weekly from late November to mid-March, so look at the Swim Guide or LAWA “Can I swim here?” results first. Skip swimming for 2 to 3 days after heavy rain.
Cable Bay Walkway. The track runs from Glenduan to Cable Bay. It is closed for lambing from 1 August to 7 October each year, in high fire risk and after dark.
Boulder Bank. The route is about 8 km and takes 2 to 3 hours one way over unformed boulders, starting at Boulder Bank Drive off Atawhai Drive and ending at The Cut. Dogs are banned for 4 km from The Cut from 15 August to the end of February to protect nesting little penguins, dotterels and terns. The 1862 lighthouse is not open to the public.
Wharariki Beach. Allow about 20 minutes each way from the car park at the end of Wharariki Road, across farmland. The track can close for lambing, calving or extreme fire danger. Rips are strong, there are no lifeguards and swimming is not recommended. Keep 20 m from seals.
Tips
- Wear sturdy shoes for the Bank, which is unformed boulders.
- Carry water on every route except the central loop.
- Take a layer and rain jacket, as weather can change quickly.
