Day trips from Shkodër

Shkodër sits close to a lake, a Mediterranean beach, two old fortresses and the edge of the Accursed Mountains. Distances and times below are approximate; check them locally. Intercity travel is by furgon (a minibus that leaves when full) or by bus. Fares drift, so check at the stop.

Komani Lake ferry

This is the best full day out. The Berisha ferry crosses the gorge from Koman to Fierza at 09:00 and returns at 13:00. The crossing takes about 2.5 hours. Fares are EUR 9 online or EUR 10 (1,000 ALL) in cash. A Shkodër shuttle to Koman leaves about 07:00 for EUR 8 and returns from Koman at 15:45, reaching Shkodër about 18:00. Berisha also lists a full-day package at EUR 25. The ferry runs from April to early November. See the Berisha ferry site .

The ferry is the only link to the far shore, so a missed boat costs a day. Cash in lek is safest.

Shala River from Koman

A boat tour up the Shala River leaves Koman at 09:30 and spends about 4 hours at the river. It costs EUR 20 online or EUR 25 in cash. Low water can stop the boat short. It makes a good add-on to the ferry day if you start early.

Theth

Theth is a long day: about 2 hours each way by road, with the shuttle leaving Shkodër at 07:00 or 07:30 and returning from Theth about 11:00 or 17:00. The fare is about EUR 12 (1,200 ALL). The Theth shuttle runs from mid-May to early October. See the shuttle times .

Valbona is not a day trip. Reaching it takes 6 to 7 hours by shuttle, ferry and minibus, so plan an overnight there.

Mountain rules for Theth and Komani

  • Ask your guesthouse or driver the day before about road and trail conditions.
  • Start early, carry 2 litres of water and an offline map, and tell someone your plan.
  • The road over Qafa e Thorës has many hairpins and no guardrails, so do not drive it at night. Fuel up at Koplik, because Theth has no petrol station.
  • Snow can close the pass roughly from November to May.
  • Near the Kosovo border, stay on marked paths because of unexploded mines. See the UK safety advice .

Velipojë beach

The coastal resort is 22 to 31 km northwest of Shkodër, a 30 to 45 minute ride. A furgon costs about 200 ALL or EUR 2. The sand is dark, with pine trees behind it and the Viluni lagoon nearby. It is busiest in July and August.

Mesi Bridge and Drisht Castle

Mesi Bridge crosses the Kir River about 5 km northeast in a straight line, or 8 km by road. It has 13 arches and is 108 m long, built from 1768 to 1770. In late spring and early summer people swim in the pools below; by late August the bed can be dry. Drisht Castle, ancient Drivastum, is a medieval fortress above the Kir valley about 10 km from Shkodër. It is free to enter. See the Mesi Bridge entry .

Ulcinj, Montenegro

Ulcinj is possible through the Muriqan or Sukobin border. Bring your passport and allow extra time at the border.
