Walking Theth's Valley Floor
Theth’s high mountain passes get most of the attention, but the valley floor has its own network of walks that need nothing more than sturdy shoes and a few free hours, no pass crossing, no guide, no permit.
Central Village Heritage Walk (2 to 3 hours, easy). A relaxed loop starting at the 1892 stone Church of Theth in the open village meadow, winding through stone-walled country lanes, crossing the river, and stopping at the roughly 400-year-old Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) before finishing at the Old Watermill (Mulliri i Vjetër). This is the one to do first; it puts the rest of the valley’s geography in context before you go further afield.
Grunas Waterfall and Canyon Walk (2 hours round trip, easy to moderate). A marked 5 km round trip departing the center, tracing the eastern bank of the Shala River through pastoral fields and shaded beech woods to the 30-meter Grunas Waterfall, then looping past the wooden footbridge over Grunas Canyon on the way back. The path is well marked with red-and-white blazes and works fine for anyone reasonably fit.
Ndërlysaj to Blue Eye Trail (1.5 to 2 hours round trip, moderate). Starting from the Ndërlysaj parking area, this riverside walk climbs about 2 km along the rocky gorge of the Black River, crossing several wooden footbridges, to reach the Blue Eye spring basin. The water here sits at a genuine 5 to 8°C year-round, so plan on looking rather than swimming unless a few seconds of cold shock sounds appealing.
Upper Valley Okol Walk (2 hours, easy). A flat, peaceful walk north along the dirt track from the center to Okol, following the river beneath the immense shadow of Mount Arapi’s south face. Quieter than the other three, since most day-trippers head south toward the waterfall and the Blue Eye instead.
Keep these four to the valley floor mentally as well as physically: none involves real elevation gain, and that’s deliberate. The Valbona Pass and Peja Pass crossings, both over 900 meters of climbing, are a different category of day entirely and need an early start, proper gear, and a route left with your guesthouse, not a spot on this list.
If you’d rather cover some of this ground with a driver and guide instead of on foot, a jeep day tour from Shkoder hits the village, the tower, and the waterfall in a single guided day. Staying in the valley itself makes all four routes doable without a car at all; Theth accommodation listings cover guesthouses within walking distance of every trailhead on this list. The official Theth tourism page and the Albanian Alps National Park page both cover seasonal trail conditions worth checking before you set out, particularly outside the July-August peak.
For the postcard viewpoints these same walks pass along the way, see sightseeing in Theth .
One concrete tip: do the Central Village walk in the late afternoon and save Grunas or the Blue Eye trail for the morning. The waterfall and canyon crowd up by midday in peak season; the village lanes stay quiet at almost any hour.
