Romantic Shkodër: Lake Dinners and Sunsets
A romantic stay in Shkodër
Shkodër is a quiet, walkable town with a lake, a hilltop castle and a pedestrian street made for evening strolls. Romance here is slow: long dinners, a boat on the water and a sunset. Prices are in Albanian lek (ALL); carry cash for small cafes and boats.
Dinner by the lake
Tavë krapi, baked carp, is the lake’s signature dish. Te Zyda at Rr. e Radovanëve in Shiroka is a simple, inexpensive restaurant with a view over Lake Shkodra, and a table near the water at dusk suits a quiet dinner for two. See the Te Zyda listing . Shiroka is 5 to 8 km from the centre, so arrange a taxi back after dark.
Sunset at Rozafa Castle
The castle stands about 130 m above the Buna and Drin rivers, with views across the plain and the lake. Go in the late afternoon, but check the closing time first because listed hours differ, from about 19:00 to 20:00 in summer and earlier in winter. The ticket is about 400 ALL, in cash. A quieter alternative is the riverside by the Buna at the same hour. See the castle’s Wikipedia page .
The evening xhiro
Albanians call the evening walk the xhiro, and the Pedonale (Rruga Kolë Idromeno) is where it happens. Stroll the street, then stop at a cafe for an espresso or a glass of Skënderbeu brandy, a well-known Albanian brand.
A slow boat on the lake
Local captains at Shiroka and Zogaj take couples out on the water, usually for about 1,500 to 3,000 ALL per boat. At Zogaj, an early-morning guided boat goes to the rocks where Dalmatian pelicans rest. Zogaj is about 12 km from the centre, an old fishing village where women still weave carpets.
Komani Lake ferry as a scenic cruise
The Berisha ferry from Koman to Fierza leaves at 09:00 and takes about 2.5 hours between steep gorge walls. Fares are EUR 9 online and EUR 10 or 1,000 ALL in cash. The ferry runs once a day each way from April to early November, so missing it costs a day. See the ferry schedule .
A night in Theth
Theth guesthouses are open for stays from mid-June to mid-September, and the Blue Eye of Theth is best on an early-morning walk before about 11:00, when it gets crowded. The water is very cold. Take these mountain rules seriously:
- Ask your guesthouse the day before about road and trail conditions.
- Start walks early, carry 2 litres of water and an offline map, and tell your host your plan.
- Stay on marked paths near the Kosovo border, where mines remain. See the UK safety advice .
- The Theth road has hairpins and no guardrails, so do not drive it at night.
