Multi-Day Trips from Shkodër: Alps and Lake
Multi-day trips from Shkodër
Shkodër is the gateway to the Albanian Alps, also called the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna). Most multi-day plans combine the Komani Lake ferry, the villages of Theth and Valbona, and a stay in town. There is no road between Theth and Valbona, and no regular passenger rail serves Shkodër, so plans depend on shuttles, the ferry and your own legs. Prices are mostly in euros here because guesthouses and operators quote them that way, but carry lek in cash.
Mountain rules
- The Theth to Valbona pass walk is a June to mid-September route. Snow can linger into late June, and October is risky.
- Ask the guesthouse the day before about the trail.
- Start by 07:00 and be over the pass by about 14:00, ahead of afternoon storms.
- Carry 2 litres of water and an offline map. Signal is patchy, so tell the guesthouse your plan.
- Mines remain unexploded around some hill towns close to the Kosovo border, so keep to marked paths. See the UK safety advice .
- At the end of May 2026, heavy snow still kept the classic trail closed, so the walk is not a certainty early in the season. See the trail report .
Albanian Alps loop, 3 to 4 days
- Day 1: Take the Shkodër shuttle to Koman at about 07:00 (EUR 8). The Berisha ferry sails at 09:00 to Fierza, about 2.5 hours. A minibus then runs to Valbona, about 1 hour and EUR 8, or a taxi at about EUR 20.
- Day 2: Hike from Valbona to Theth over the pass, or the reverse. Expect about 14 to 17 km, about 900 to 1,050 m of climbing, and 6 to 9 hours. The Valbona Pass is about 1,795 m high, and the trail is waymarked in red and white. See the trail guide .
- Day 3: Take the shuttle from Theth back to Shkodër, which leaves about 11:00 or 17:00.
The ferry runs from April to early November and the Theth shuttle from mid-May to early October. A direct Valbona to Shkodër bus of about 4 hours appears on aggregators only, so ask locally.
Theth for two nights
Two nights in Theth gives time for the church, the Lock-in Tower, the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye. Guesthouses fill up from June to September. Carry cash, because there is no ATM in Theth. The road is paved and takes about 2 hours from Shkodër; do not drive its hairpins at night.
Shkodër plus Montenegro
Shkodër pairs with Ulcinj and the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar by bus. Check times and fares locally, bring your passport, and allow time at the border.
Peaks of the Balkans trail
This long-distance waymarked trail passes through Theth and Valbona. Snow lingered on it in 2026, so check conditions with an operator before you commit.
Staying in Shkodër
