Romantic Koblenz: Castle, Sunset and Wine
A romantic weekend on the Rhine
Koblenz is the birthplace of Rhine Romanticism, and the setting still suits a couple’s weekend: a fairytale castle upriver, river light in the evening, half-timbered wine rooms and long walks beside the water. Most of it is free or cheap, and the Old Town is compact enough to cover on foot.
Schloss Stolzenfels
Karl Friedrich Schinkel rebuilt this castle between 1836 and 1842 from a medieval ruin, and it is the best-known piece of Rhine Romanticism in the area. The Knights’ Hall holds historical armour, the reception hall has frescoes, and the terraces, pergola and hillside gardens look out over the river. Tickets cost 6 EUR for adults, and the interior is seen on a guided tour in German with a handout for other languages.
It sits on the left bank about 5 km south of the centre, reached by bus 670 and then a walk uphill of about 20 minutes. From 15 March to 31 October it opens Thursday to Sunday and on holidays, from 10:00 to 17:00. In November it opens on weekends and holidays, and it is closed in December and January. Check the Stolzenfels page for dates.
Sunset at the confluence
The Deutsches Eck headland is free and has a clear view of the Moselle running into the Rhine. Walk out toward the point in the late afternoon and then follow the tree-lined promenade along Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer to watch the light change on the water and the ships. The riverside Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, a 3.5 km park laid out in the 1850s, is the quieter option for a long evening stroll.
Across the Rhine by cable car
The cable car from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer to Ehrenbreitstein is the most scenic short ride in Koblenz. In season it runs daily until 19:00, so check sunset time for your dates before planning an evening return. The combined ticket with fortress entry is 21.90 EUR for an adult.
Dinner in a half-timbered house
Weinhaus Hubertus on Florinsmarkt is housed in one of the oldest half-timbered buildings in Koblenz. It offers candlelit tables and traditional German dishes, with Moselle and Rhine wines to go with them. Smaller taverns in the old centre often take cash only.
Where to stay
Diehls Hotel on Rheinsteigufer in Ehrenbreitstein sits on the right bank, so rooms look across the water to the Deutsches Eck and the Old Town. See the hotel website for room types. For other options in the old centre, search by date on the booking page below.
A glass of wine by the river
The Electoral Palace gardens beside the Rhine are free and open daily, with terraced lawns, fountains and rose beds, and the Grand Cafe Schloss Koblenz is part of the grounds. To go further, the Terrassenmosel villages of Winningen and Koblenz-Lay have family wineries that offer tastings of dry Riesling.
Practical notes
Koblenz is a safe city for an evening stroll, with ordinary city precautions. The Rhine is a busy shipping channel, so keep back from the water’s edge.
