A Few Days in Kuusalu and Lahemaa
Kuusalu parish suits a short stay of two to three nights rather than a long tour. The sights are spread along the Harju County coast, 40 to 55 km east of Tallinn, and each takes a few hours, so a base on the coast saves daily driving. Eastern Lahemaa lies a little further along and can fill a third day.
Day one: Viru bog and Kolga Bay
Start at the Viru bog nature trail. The boardwalk is 3 km, the trail is 3.5 km one way and the loop is about 5.5 km. It is free, and the RMK trail page gives the rules: stay on the boardwalk, no bikes, no climbing the tower in thunderstorms. In the afternoon, go to Tsitre on Kolga Bay for the 0.5 km tree trail, the beach and the observation tower. Kolga manor is close by, and its exterior can be seen from the road. The interior is open by booking only.
Day two: Hara, Juminda and Viinistu
Spend the morning at the Hara submarine base, a derelict Soviet-era site with a ticketed pier walk: EUR 10 for adults, EUR 7 for students and seniors, EUR 22 for a family. Outside the summer season it is open by reservation, so write to info@harasadam.ee . Nearby, Majakivi is the third-largest erratic boulder in Estonia, about 7 m high, and the RMK Majakivi-Pikanõmme trail runs about 7 km. In the afternoon, visit the Viinistu Art Museum, where tickets are EUR 6 for adults and EUR 3 for concessions, with opening days that change by season.
Day three: eastern Lahemaa
Palmse, Sagadi, Altja and Käsmu are in Vihula parish, in Lääne-Viru County. Choose one or two rather than all four. The park has no entry fee, while individual sights charge: Palmse manor about EUR 5 and the Sagadi forest museum about EUR 3. See the Lahemaa overview for more.
Where to sleep
- Viinistu art hotel sits on the same harbour as the museum and a restaurant. Check amenities and prices with the hotel directly.
- Hara has a glamping and campsite option listed with Visit Estonia. Campsite guests get free entry to the base area.
- RMK campsites in Lahemaa, including Tsitre on Kolga Bay, are normally free to use. They suit self-sufficient hikers with a tent and their own supplies.
- Tallinn has far more rooms, and the parish is within an hour of it by car. Compare stays near the coast on Booking.com .
Getting around
A car is the practical choice for a multi-day plan. Buses on the E20 stop at the Loksa tee exit, about 1.3 km from the bog trailhead, and the rest of the parish is harder to reach without wheels. Check peatus.ee for timetables.
Tips
- Book Kolga manor and the Kiiu tower ahead; both take visitors by advance booking only.
- Winter days are short, so plan one main stop per day.
- Keep a day free for weather, since bog and coast walks are best in dry conditions.
