Monasteries and Sights of Pomoravlje
The best sights in Pomoravlje District are medieval monasteries, a protected waterfall and a pair of industrial and natural sites that reward a slower look. Three of the monasteries are active religious communities, so the tone of a visit matters. Costs are in Serbian dinars (RSD), and signs outside the towns are often Cyrillic only.
Manasija
Manasija stands 2 km northwest of Despotovac and was founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević between 1406 and 1418. Its defining feature is the ring of walls and towers around the church, with Morava-school frescoes inside. Restoration of the ramparts is due to finish by 2027, so parts of the walls may be fenced off during your visit.
This is a working monastery. Cover your shoulders and knees, ask before photographing inside the church and keep conversation low.
Ravanica
Ravanica is in the village of Senje, in Ćuprija municipality, about 10 to 12 km from Ćuprija town. Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović endowed it and is buried in the church, and his relics returned in 1989. The church was built in the 1370s. It is a place of prayer first, so keep quiet and dress modestly.
Kalenić
Kalenić monastery is in Rekovac municipality. Like Manasija and Ravanica it is an active monastic community, with the same expectations on dress and photography. Many women cover their heads in the church, which is customary rather than required.
Lisine natural monument
Lisine, about 20 km east of Despotovac, has first-category protection. The Veliki Buk waterfall, about 20 m high, is fed by the Veliko Vrelo spring below Beljanica. Walk the paths only and take everything you carry back out. The operator’s page describes Lisine alongside Resava Cave.
Senjski Rudnik
The Senjski Rudnik coal mining museum in Senje opened on 1 May 1982. The mining complex includes Aleksandar’s adit, an administrative building, workshops and a steam engine from 1874. Check opening hours before you go.
Vrelo Grze
Vrelo Grze is a protected natural monument of the third category on the Grza river near Paraćin. The Paraćin Tourist Organisation manages it, and it lies roughly 15 to 25 km from the town.
Ćuprija and Horreum Margi
Ćuprija stands on the site of Horreum Margi, a Late Roman fort of the 4th to 5th century that later gained a medieval fortification and a bastion built in 1737. Most of it lies inside a military barracks, so it is background reading, and you cannot tour it. Read about it on Kulturno nasleđe .
In Jagodina
The Museum of Naive and Marginal Art at Boška Đuričića 10 opens Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 15:00. See the museum site .
