A Quiet Weekend for Two in Pomoravlje
Pomoravlje District in central Serbia is a modest, low-key choice for two. It offers countryside, a waterfall, a show cave and a small gallery town rather than a resort scene, so a romantic weekend here is about slow days, drives through the hills and simple rural stays. Prices are in Serbian dinars (RSD).
Where to stay
Look for rural stays near Despotovac or Paraćin. Despotovac puts you close to the waterfall, the cave and the wooded hills of the east. Paraćin is nearer the motorway. Jagodina offers the widest choice of rooms if you would rather have a town base. Compare rooms on a booking site, and note that a car is needed to reach the countryside around Despotovac.
A morning at the Veliki Buk waterfall
The Veliki Buk waterfall at Lisine is about 20 m high and is fed by the Veliko Vrelo spring below Beljanica. It lies about 20 km east of Despotovac within a protected natural monument. Go early, walk the footpath together and keep to the marked paths. The site is run by the cave operator, which also has a restaurant at Lisine.
Resava Cave for two
A guided tour of Resava Cave makes a shared outing that feels out of the ordinary. Tours leave at 08:30 and every 45 minutes after that, with the last at 15:30. Adults pay 700 RSD and students pay 650 RSD. The route follows about 800 m of walkway through a cold, damp cave, so each of you should bring a jacket and wear shoes with grip. See the operator site for the current schedule, and phone 035/611-110 to confirm winter hours.
An afternoon in Jagodina
The Museum of Naive and Marginal Art at Boška Đuričića 10 is a small, calm place to spend an afternoon together. It is open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 15:00, and the museum site gives current details. The collection began in 1960 as the Gallery of Self-taught Artists.
Quiet countryside drives
The east of the district is hilly, with limestone slopes around Despotovac, while the Velika Morava plain to the west is flat. A short drive between the two gives a good change of scenery. Rural road signs are often in Cyrillic only, so keep a phone map handy.
Monasteries
The district’s monasteries are active religious communities and are described on the sightseeing page , where the etiquette for visiting is set out.
