Pompeii and Vesuvius for Couples
Pompeii is an archaeological park and a burial place, so it works best for couples who enjoy ancient art, long walks and an unhurried day out. Two parts of a visit suit a pair especially well: the frescoes at the Villa dei Misteri and the guided walk up Vesuvius. Prices are in euros.
The Villa dei Misteri frescoes
The Villa dei Misteri stands outside the ancient city walls, on the suburban villas route that begins at the Porta Ercolano and Via dei Sepolcri entrance. The villa is known for its fresco frieze, and Via dei Sepolcri leads to it. The route is included in the Pompeii+ ticket at EUR 25. Holders of the EUR 20 Pompeii Express ticket can add it for EUR 8, paid by card only at that entrance.
A Vesuvius walk together
The Gran Cono walk on Path No. 5 is a guided climb on a path above 1,000 m, with a guide from the Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio accompanying each group. Tickets are online only through the authorised seller and cost EUR 10, or EUR 11.68 with fees. Each 10 minute slot takes 50 people, released 30 days ahead, so couples who want a particular morning should book early. The walk takes up to 2 hours return on the short route, or up to 3 hours on the loop to Rifugio Imbo. The route along the very top of the crater is closed to the public. Access closes automatically in orange weather alerts, so keep the day flexible. The walk starts at Piazzale Quota 1000, where there is no parking and no public toilets at present.
Hours depend on the month. From April to June and in September the last access is 17:00. In July and August it is 18:00, in March and October 16:00, and in January, February, November and December 15:00. Your walk must end within an hour of the last access time. See the park page for the full rules.
Visiting the ancient city as a pair
Starting at opening time gives the coolest walking. The site is large and mostly without shade, and the paving is uneven, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Between 16 March and 14 October the site opens 09:00 to 19:00, and in winter it closes at 17:00. Every ticket carries a name, so each of you needs your own.
Parts of the ancient city are solemn, because people died here in AD 79, so keep the visit quiet and unhurried.
Where to stay
Pompeii is easy to reach from Naples or Sorrento by Circumvesuviana, about 30 to 40 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri. For a stay near the site, search Booking.com and check how close each address is to a train stop.
