Niagara Falls Viewpoints and Lookouts
Sightseeing at Niagara Falls means choosing a side, because each bank gives a different view. The Canadian side faces both falls head on. The US side puts you right beside them. Horseshoe Falls is about 670 metres wide, the American Falls about 320 metres, and both drop roughly 57 metres. The narrow Bridal Veil Falls sits between Luna Island and the American Falls.
US side viewpoints (free, USD where a fee applies)
Niagara Falls State Park opened in 1885 and is the oldest state park in the United States. It is free and open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
- Prospect Point faces the American Falls. Its observation tower rises 282 feet above the gorge, costs $1.25 on its own, and is included in a Maid of the Mist ticket.
- Goat Island lies between the American and Horseshoe Falls, and you can reach it on foot or by car over a bridge above the rapids.
- Terrapin Point is the south-west tip of Goat Island, right at the crest of Horseshoe Falls. It is the best US side spot for sunset and for the night lights.
- Luna Island puts you between the American and Bridal Veil Falls.
- Three Sisters Islands have small bridges over the fast upper rapids.
Canadian side viewpoints (CAD where a fee applies)
- Queen Victoria Park promenade is a free walk, open 24 hours, with a straight-on view of both falls.
- Table Rock Centre sits at the Canadian brink of Horseshoe Falls. The free viewing plaza is beside the stone railing, where about 600,000 gallons of water pour over the edge every second.
- Skylon Tower is at 5200 Robinson Street in the Fallsview district, not on Clifton Hill. The tower is 520 feet tall and 775 feet above the base of the gorge. Yellow glass elevators reach the deck in 52 seconds. Admission is about $20 CAD for adults and $10 CAD for children 4 to 12, plus tax. The revolving dining room turns once an hour, and lunch or dinner guests get deck access.
- Niagara SkyWheel on Clifton Hill rises 53 metres in enclosed gondolas for another high view of both falls.
Night lights and fireworks
Every night after dusk, coloured LED lights wash over the American and Horseshoe Falls. Fireworks are fired from the gorge between the falls, best seen from Queen Victoria Park, Prospect Point or a hotel room. The 2026 series ran nightly at 10:00 pm from May 15 to October 12. The Winter Festival of Lights begins in mid November.
Border crossings and views
The Rainbow Bridge offers an elevated view of both falls in one frame. It is a walk of 440 metres and it is open at all hours. You need a passport and clearance at both ends. A pedestrian toll of about $1.25 is charged only when you walk into the US.
Tips
- Go early for the quietest viewing on Goat Island and Table Rock.
- Spray soaks anyone close to the railings, so bring a rain jacket.
- Stay behind every railing, because the water above and below the falls can kill.
