Multi-Day Trips from Nouakchott
Advisory, October 2026: The US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel, with Level 4 military zones in the north and near the Mali and Algeria borders. The UK FCDO advises against all travel east of a line from Kankossa to Zouerat and within 25 km of the Mali border, and against all but essential travel to much of the interior. Check the FCDO regional risks before any trip, because travel against FCDO advice can void insurance.
Mauritania’s best-known journeys start in Nouakchott but run for days, over long distances and rough pistes. Two of them, Banc d’Arguin and the Diawling wetland, sit outside the warned areas. The desert circuit in the Adrar needs more caution, and the iron ore railway corridor is not planned here.
Banc d’Arguin, 2 to 3 days
The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Atlantic coast, where shallow banks hold more than two million migratory shorebirds, with flamingos, pelicans and terns. Base yourself in a coastal village such as Iwik or Téssot, reached by a 4x4 piste off the N2 highway. Trips on the water are made by wooden sailing boats called lanches, crewed by Imraguen fishermen.
- Pay the entry fee at the park offices. Offshore islands need a special permit.
- Take a local guide who knows the tides.
- Accommodation is basic, in campsites or community guesthouses. Arrange it ahead, as phone coverage is often absent.
- The best season is October to March, according to Routard.
Diawling and the Senegal River delta, 2 to 3 days
Diawling National Park is a Ramsar wetland and biosphere reserve about 220 km south of Nouakchott, near the Diama dam on the Senegal border. It shelters warthogs, patas monkeys, monitor lizards and more than 200 species of migratory waterbirds. The road is paved as far as Keur Macène, then it becomes a rough dirt piste that needs a 4x4. Some visitors cross into Saint-Louis in Senegal at the Diama border post. The park’s website is pnd.mr .
The Adrar circuit, 4 to 6 days
The classic route runs from Nouakchott through Akjoujt to Atar, about 435 km on the paved N1, then on to the Terjit oasis, with its palm-lined canyon and springs, to Chinguetti and Ouadane. Chinguetti is a UNESCO ksar founded in the 13th century, known for its stone minaret and private manuscript libraries. Ouadane is a ruined stone caravan town on a cliff. A rented 4x4 with a driver and guide is essential.
Atar, Chinguetti and Ouadane lie in the area the FCDO leaves out of its warning, and Al Jazeera reported in June 2026 that tourists are visiting them again. Military-zone closures can change at short notice, and Canada advises avoiding all travel east of the Zouerat, Ouadane, Tidjikja and Kiffa line. Read the current advice in the week you travel. The Guelb er Richat, east of Ouadane, lies in an area governments advise against and is not a trip to plan here.
The iron ore railway
The SNIM line carries iron ore 704 km from Zouerat to Nouadhibou. A second-class passenger ticket costs about 300 MRU (2025, Wikivoyage), while riding the ore wagons is officially banned for foreign tourists, with patchy enforcement. The line runs close to the Western Sahara border, where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel and landmines are a risk, so the corridor is not covered in this guide.
Before you go
- There is no visa at the airport since 5 January 2025. Apply for the e-visa via ANRPTS and carry exact cash in euros or dollars.
- Alcohol is illegal and dress is conservative. Avoid photographing military sites.
