Málaga Sights, Museums and Gardens
The sights of Málaga’s old town sit close together, so a day on foot can cover the Roman Theatre, the cathedral, the Alcazaba and a Picasso museum. The notes below give what each place is, what it costs in 2026 and when it is closed.
Ancient and medieval
Roman Theatre. At the foot of the Alcazaba, the theatre dates from the 1st century BC and was rediscovered in 1951. Entry is free. A secondary source gives Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, so check hours before you go. The Moorish builders of the Alcazaba reused stone from it.
Alcazaba and Gibralfaro. The Alcazaba is an 11th-century palace-fortress and Gibralfaro is the 14th-century castle above it. A single ticket is EUR 7, the combined ticket is EUR 10, and entry is free on Sundays from 14:00. The official price list has the hours, which change on 1 November.
Cathedral
The cathedral on Calle Molina Lario 9 was built between 1528 and 1782, with a Renaissance interior and a Baroque façade. It is nicknamed La Manquita because only the 84 m north tower was built. Entry is EUR 10 with an audio guide. Pedro de Mena carved the choir stalls. The rooftops are visited by guided tour only, and the price is on the cathedral’s tariff page . The site publishes two hour tables, so check on the day.
Art
- Museo Picasso Málaga (Calle San Agustín 8): EUR 13, free for the last two hours on Sundays.
- Casa Natal de Picasso (Plaza de la Merced 15): EUR 3, free on Sundays from 16:00 to 20:00. The Casa Natal page has hours.
- Centre Pompidou Málaga at Muelle Uno sits under a coloured glass cube by Daniel Buren. It is closed on Tuesdays and free on Sundays from 16:00.
- Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga: 19th-century Andalusian painting, closed on Mondays.
Gardens, market and cemetery
The Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción was founded in 1855 by the Loring-Heredia family. Entry is EUR 5.20, it is closed on Mondays, and EMT bus 20 runs to it from the centre followed by a 15-minute walk.
Atarazanas market occupies a 19th-century iron hall that keeps a Nasrid horseshoe gate from the earlier building. It is closed on Sundays and open from about 08:00 to between 14:00 and 15:00 the rest of the week, so check before you go.
The English Cemetery, founded in 1831, is a non-Catholic burial ground. Check its opening hours first.
Tips
- Sunday free windows differ by venue, so plan the order of the day around them.
