Seville on Foot: Four Neighbourhood Walks
Seville’s old town is built for walking, and four neighbourhoods give you a full day on foot without an operator or a ticket.
Santa Cruz and the Judería
Begin at Plaza del Triunfo and take Callejón del Agua to Plaza de Santa Cruz, then Plaza de Doña Elvira and the Jardines de Murillo. The alleys are narrow and shady, which helps in the heat, and patios appear behind iron gates. This area is also where rosemary sprig sellers work, so keep your hands at your sides and say “no, gracias”.
Triana and its ceramics
Cross the Puente de Isabel II, browse the Mercado de Triana, walk Calle San Jacinto and then follow the river along Calle Betis for views of the old town. The Centro Cerámica Triana on Calle Antillano Campos covers the district’s tile tradition.
El Arenal and the river
From the Torre del Oro, stroll along Paseo de Cristóbal Colón to the Real Maestranza bullring. Pause at the Hospital de la Caridad for paintings by Murillo and Valdés Leal. The riverside is flat and open, so it works best in the evening.
Alfalfa, Regina and the Alameda
Walk from Plaza del Salvador up Calle Sierpes to the Setas, where tickets start from €16, then continue north to the Alameda de Hércules. On Thursday mornings Calle Feria hosts the El Jueves flea market.
Guided options
Self-guided routes need nothing booked, but a guide can add history and stories. You can compare walking tours in Seville and check the meeting point and language before paying. Tourist information is available at turismo.sevilla.org .
Reading the streets
Santa Cruz is a maze, so a map app helps, but wrong turns often lead to a patio or a quiet plaza. Triana feels more local, with ceramics shops and a market with plenty of food stalls. El Arenal is wider and more open, while Alfalfa mixes shopping streets with tapas bars. Plan a coffee stop in each district to keep the pace gentle.
Getting between areas
Distances are short. When your feet tire, use TUSSAM buses, and a one-day tourist card costs €5. Details are on tussam.es .
Timing
Walk between 08:30 and 12:00 or after 19:30. Summer alerts above 40C are common, so leave the middle of the day for the Cathedral (€13 online) or a museum with air conditioning.
More sights along these routes are on the sightseeing page . Tip: start in Santa Cruz at 09:00 before the tour groups arrive and finish in Triana at dusk.
